The FIA has officially released the final race classification for the 2025 Austrian Grand Prix following an intense and drama-filled Formula 1 weekend at the Red Bull Ring. The event delivered plenty of action from the start, with chaos unfolding even before the lights went out.
Carlos Sainz was unable to get his Williams off the grid during the formation lap, causing a delay to the race start. Once the Austrian GP got underway, a major incident occurred on the opening lap. Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli locked up into Turn 3 and collided with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, resulting in immediate retirements for both drivers. Following a review by the stewards, Antonelli received a three-place grid penalty for the upcoming British Grand Prix.
While the early exit of the defending champion Verstappen grabbed headlines, the on-track battle between McLaren teammates Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri quickly became the center of attention. The pair put on an exhilarating show, swapping positions multiple times in a fierce contest for the win. In the end, it was Norris who emerged victorious, completing a near-perfect weekend and keeping his title ambitions alive.
Oscar Piastri came home in second, while Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc secured the final podium spot in third place. Lewis Hamilton, also driving for Ferrari, finished fourth after a solid race, while George Russell rounded out the top five for Mercedes.
Racing Bulls’ Liam Lawson claimed sixth, ahead of Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso in seventh. Kick Sauber’s Gabriel Bortoleto and Nico Hulkenberg took eighth and ninth respectively, while Esteban Ocon completed the points-scoring positions in tenth for Haas.
Further down the order, Oliver Bearman (Haas), Isack Hadjar (Racing Bulls), Pierre Gasly (Alpine), and Lance Stroll (Aston Martin) all finished one lap down. Franco Colapinto crossed the line in 15th for Alpine but was handed a five-second penalty following a clash with Piastri. Yuki Tsunoda finished 16th, two laps behind, after also receiving a 10-second penalty for contact with Colapinto.
Three drivers did not finish the race: Verstappen, Antonelli, and Alex Albon (Williams), while Carlos Sainz was classified as DNS (Did Not Start) due to his formation lap issue.
Oscar Piastri recorded the fastest lap of the race with a time of 1:07.924 on lap 59. However, due to a regulatory change introduced for the 2025 season, the fastest lap no longer awards any points. This rule was implemented to discourage drivers from making unnecessary late pit stops simply to claim the extra point.
One of the most notable examples of this tactic occurred in 2024, when Daniel Ricciardo, during his final F1 appearance, pitted late and claimed the fastest lap despite finishing last in the Singapore Grand Prix. His move ultimately deprived Lando Norris of the point and benefited Max Verstappen in the championship standings.
With the dust settled in Austria, the title race remains alive—and more competitive than ever.
