A major setback has hit the racing ambitions of Kalle Rovanperä, as the Red Bull-backed star has been forced to step away from his 2026 campaign due to ongoing medical concerns, putting his long-term goal of reaching Formula One on hold.
The two-time World Rally Champion had been making a bold transition away from rallying in pursuit of a single-seater career path. Widely regarded as one of the most naturally gifted drivers of his generation, Rovanperä etched his name into history by becoming the youngest champion in World Rally Championship history at just 22 years old, before securing a second title the following year. His switch to circuit racing in 2026 marked a significant shift in direction, driven by a clear ambition to one day compete at the pinnacle of motorsport.
His first taste of single-seater competition came in the Formula Regional Oceania Trophy earlier this year. Competing across New Zealand circuits, the Finnish driver showed steady progress, adapting to a completely different racing discipline. Across 11 races, he managed to secure a podium finish—third place at Teretonga Park—demonstrating flashes of his potential despite limited experience. However, his campaign was cut short when he withdrew from the final round at Highlands Motorsport Park, raising early concerns about his condition.
Rovanperä had been preparing for a crucial next step in Japan’s Super Formula championship, a series known for its highly competitive grid and strong links to F1 development pathways. The season opener at Motegi on April 4 was expected to mark an important milestone in his transition. Unfortunately, those plans were derailed after he began experiencing symptoms consistent with vertigo during pre-season testing.
In a personal statement, Rovanperä revealed that the issue had been affecting him for some time but had worsened significantly this year. As a result, he confirmed he would step back from the upcoming races and withdraw entirely from the 2026 Super Formula season in order to focus on his health.
His long-time backers at Toyota also addressed the situation, with chairman Akio Toyoda expressing both admiration and concern. Toyoda explained that while Rovanperä’s raw speed and determination were evident during private testing, his physical condition was becoming increasingly difficult to manage. Following medical evaluations, the team ultimately concluded that continuing to compete would pose too great a risk.
Toyoda described the decision as deeply challenging, balancing the desire to see a talented driver chase his dreams against the responsibility to safeguard his well-being. He also offered reassurance to fans, emphasizing that this pause does not signal the end of Rovanperä’s journey in circuit racing, but rather a necessary step to ensure his long-term future in the sport.
The withdrawal represents a significant blow to Rovanperä’s F1 aspirations. Super Formula is widely seen as one of the most effective proving grounds outside Europe, featuring drivers with direct links to F1 teams. Competitors in the 2026 grid include names such as Luke Browning, Ayumu Iwasa, and Zak O’Sullivan—all of whom have experience within the F1 ecosystem.
Beyond experience, the series offers a valuable opportunity to earn FIA super licence points, a key requirement for entry into Formula One. With 25 points awarded to the champion, 20 for second place, and 15 for third, strong performance in Super Formula can significantly accelerate a driver’s progression. A total of 40 points is required to qualify for an F1 super licence, which explains why drivers like Colton Herta have pursued alternative single-seater routes to strengthen their eligibility.
For now, Rovanperä’s focus shifts entirely to recovery. While his immediate racing plans are on hold, his talent and determination remain unquestioned. If he can overcome these health challenges, there is little doubt that his pursuit of Formula One could resume in the future.
