Felipe Drugovich Set to Replace Fernando Alonso for FP1 in Bahrain Grand Prix
Aston Martin has confirmed that Fernando Alonso will not take part in the opening free practice session (FP1) of the Bahrain Grand Prix this weekend. Instead, reserve driver Felipe Drugovich will step into the AMR25 for the first hour of track time at the Sakhir International Circuit. Alonso will resume driving duties in the second practice session (FP2) later that day.
This move marks another significant opportunity for Drugovich to gain further Formula 1 experience behind the wheel of a current-generation car. The 24-year-old Brazilian has become a familiar face in the Aston Martin paddock since joining the team as a reserve driver following his 2022 FIA Formula 2 championship win.
Expressing his enthusiasm ahead of the session, Drugovich shared his excitement about returning to F1 action:
“I’m really pleased to be getting another chance to drive the car, especially so early in the new season. I’ve spent a lot of time on the simulator preparing for this, and it’s always exciting to be part of the action at a track like Bahrain,” he said.
“Bahrain is a circuit I enjoy a lot and know quite well, so I’m confident I can give the team some useful feedback. My goal is to contribute as much as I can and provide the data needed to support our performance across the weekend. I appreciate the team’s continued faith in me and the opportunity to get back on track.”
Drugovich is no stranger to the Bahrain International Circuit, having previously filled in for Lance Stroll during pre-season testing at the same venue in 2023. His familiarity with the circuit and the car makes him a solid choice for the team’s data-gathering session, especially at a track known for its demanding layout and tire-degradation challenges.
In addition to his on-track experience, Drugovich has played a key role in Aston Martin’s development efforts through his contributions in the simulator. His work at the Aston Martin Racing Technology Campus (AMRTC) has helped the team fine-tune performance and strategy decisions, especially as they look to build on the progress made during the 2023 season.

With Alonso entering his 21st F1 season and Stroll still solidifying his place as a lead driver, having a capable backup like Drugovich provides the team with additional flexibility and support.
This FP1 run is another chapter in Drugovich’s gradual but steady immersion into Formula 1, as he continues to build experience in the hope of securing a full-time race seat in the future. Since winning the F2 championship in 2022, Drugovich has taken part in several FP1 sessions with Aston Martin, and his performances have drawn attention from the wider paddock.
Although the session will be brief, consisting of just one hour of track time, every lap will be crucial — both for Drugovich’s personal development and for the team’s data collection. The first free practice session is key for establishing car balance, assessing tire behavior, and identifying setup directions, especially under Bahrain’s unique track conditions, which include high winds, temperature fluctuations, and heavy braking zones.
Alonso’s temporary absence from FP1 is not unusual for veteran drivers, especially early in the season when teams seek to evaluate their younger or reserve drivers in a live race-weekend setting. With Alonso’s wealth of experience, missing FP1 is unlikely to hinder his overall race preparation.
