Ruben Amorim gave an interview to the British channel ‘BBC Sport’ where he spoke about his career as a football coach.
The Manchester United coach recalled his first challenge as a team leader and the path he has taken since then.
“Sometimes it’s destiny. At Casa Pia, I wanted to coach. Be a head coach. I went to the 3rd division to have that opportunity. I needed to feel what it was like to be a coach. I have two young children, so I tried a club close to my house These details led me to Casa Pia.
A former Benfica player, Amorim was close to joining the Luz club as a coach, however, the management policy of red and black football at the time ended up taking the coach to other places.
“I didn’t go to Benfica because, there, we don’t have full control over the youth teams. I felt that this was important for me because, the way I see football, the coach needs to control this. It’s not deciding everything, that’s different “, he highlighted.
Amorim spoke about his time at SC Braga, and subsequent arrival at Sporting, reinforcing the risk that both clubs took with his signing.
“I went to Sp. Braga B. It was to feel like a bigger club. I was there as a player. It’s a club with better conditions and I wanted to see that. Then, destiny took me to the first team and I was very lucky in the first games, it was a trap for President António Salvador. The rest is history.
