Tony Iommi, the legendary guitarist and co-founder of Black Sabbath, has officially confirmed that the iconic band will not be returning to the stage. In a recent interview, Iommi addressed long-standing rumors about a possible reunion, stating firmly that the group’s live performances are now a thing of the past.
Black Sabbath, formed in Birmingham in 1968, is widely credited with creating the heavy metal genre. With its original members Ozzy Osbourne, Geezer Butler, Bill Ward, and Tony Iommi the band achieved international success and changed the course of rock music. Their final tour, aptly named The End, concluded in 2017 with a powerful farewell concert in their hometown, which many viewed as the band’s official send-off.
Despite ongoing speculation from fans about one last reunion, Iommi made it clear that the band is done performing. “That last show in Birmingham was the right way to close it,” he said. “We went out on a high note, and that’s how it should be remembered.”
Now in his late seventies, Iommi pointed out that the physical demands of touring are no longer manageable. “We’re not in our prime anymore. Getting back on the road isn’t realistic. It’s better to leave things where they ended naturally,” he explained.
Although the band members have occasionally teamed up on special releases or studio recordings, a full live comeback is off the table. Osbourne’s recent health issues have only made the prospect more unlikely, further confirming Iommi’s stance.
While live shows may be over, Black Sabbath’s legacy continues through reissues, unreleased material, and the solo work of its members. Iommi hinted at working on new music independently, keeping the creative flame alive.
“We gave it everything, and the fans were incredible,” Iommi said. “Black Sabbath had an amazing journey, but it’s time to let it rest.”
With his words, any hope of seeing the band live again is officially laid to rest but their influence and music will live on for decades to come.
