Legendary guitarist Tony Iommi has shared his thoughts on the end of Black Sabbath, marking the official close of a groundbreaking era in heavy metal history. The iconic band, formed in Birmingham in 1968, played their final show in 2017, bringing to an end nearly five decades of music that shaped the genre.
In a recent interview, Iommi opened up about the emotional journey of saying goodbye to the band he helped create. “It was bittersweet,” he admitted. “You’re relieved in one sense, but there’s also a deep sadness knowing it’s the end of something that’s been your whole life.”
Black Sabbath’s farewell tour, dubbed The End, concluded in their hometown, Birmingham—a fitting place for the band’s final bow. Iommi, along with frontman Ozzy Osbourne, bassist Geezer Butler, and drummer Tommy Clufetos (who filled in for Bill Ward), delivered a powerful performance that reminded fans why the band became pioneers of heavy metal.
Despite health challenges and years on the road, Iommi said the band gave their all until the final note. “We didn’t want to go out weak—we wanted to go out strong. And I think we did,” he said.
While Sabbath may have played their last show, Iommi hasn’t ruled out making music entirely. “I’m always in the studio fiddling with riffs,” he revealed. “I’ll never stop doing that. It’s part of who I am.”
