Toto Wolff has shared his honest thoughts on the possibility of ever working alongside former Red Bull boss Christian Horner, offering a measured but firm response shaped by years of intense rivalry in Formula 1.
For over a decade, Wolff and Horner stood at the center of one of the sport’s fiercest competitive eras. Between 2013 and 2024, their respective teams—Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team and Red Bull Racing—dominated the Constructors’ Championship, winning 11 out of 12 titles during that period. Their rivalry reached its boiling point in the dramatic 2021 season, when Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton went head-to-head in one of the most controversial title fights in F1 history.
Throughout those years, Wolff and Horner frequently clashed both on and off the track, engaging in public disagreements and heated exchanges that often spilled into the media. Even after the 2021 season, tensions between the two figures remained high, with both continuing to defend their teams and drivers in a fiercely competitive environment.
However, the dynamic shifted significantly in 2025 when Horner was dismissed from his role as Red Bull team principal midway through the season. Since then, Wolff’s tone toward his long-time rival has softened. In fact, the Mercedes boss has openly acknowledged Horner’s achievements in Formula 1 and even admitted that he somewhat misses the competitive edge that Horner brought to the paddock.
Despite this more reflective stance, Wolff has made it clear that a professional alliance between the two remains highly unlikely. When asked whether he could ever see Horner as a collaborator or partner in the future, Wolff was direct in his response, stating that he does not believe such a scenario would work.
At the same time, Wolff offered a more philosophical perspective on their past conflict. He suggested that even in moments of peak frustration and anger, it is important to recognize that rivals are still human, with their own strengths and positive qualities. According to Wolff, if circumstances had been different and the intense competitive pressure removed, it is entirely possible that he and Horner could have shared more amicable moments—perhaps even enjoying a relaxed conversation over dinner.
Meanwhile, Horner’s future in Formula 1 remains uncertain. Following his departure from Red Bull, speculation has surrounded a potential return to the sport in a new capacity. One possibility had been a move to Aston Martin F1 Team, particularly given Horner’s previous working relationship with renowned designer Adrian Newey. However, recent developments suggest that this opportunity may no longer be viable.
Reports now indicate that Jonathan Wheatley is set to join the Silverstone-based team after leaving Audi, effectively closing that door for Horner. As a result, attention has shifted toward Alpine F1 Team as a potential destination.
Alpine has been strongly linked with Horner in recent months, especially as investment firm Otro Capital looks to sell its 24 percent stake in the team. This situation initially appeared to present Horner with an opportunity not only to return to F1 leadership but also to gain partial ownership of a team.
However, that possibility is now under threat as Mercedes reportedly emerges as the leading contender to purchase the stake. Should that deal go through, it would significantly reduce Horner’s chances of securing a role at Alpine—particularly in a senior leadership or ownership position.
As things stand, Horner finds himself in a challenging position, with several potential pathways back into Formula 1 narrowing. While his track record and experience remain undeniable, the shifting landscape of team leadership and investment could make his return more complicated than expected.
In contrast, Wolff continues to lead Mercedes with stability, reflecting on past rivalries while remaining focused on the team’s future. Although he may have gained a newfound appreciation for Horner’s presence in the sport, one thing is clear: their competitive history is unlikely to evolve into a working partnership anytime soon.
