Christian Horner Breaks Silence on Red Bull Exit: ‘It Felt Like Being Handed a Shocking Blow’
Former Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has opened up about the emotional turmoil surrounding his abrupt dismissal from Red Bull Racing, admitting the moment felt like being blindsided by a crushing and deeply personal setback.
Horner, who had led the Milton Keynes-based squad for two decades, was relieved of his duties shortly after the 2025 British Grand Prix. The decision, confirmed on July 9 by parent company Red Bull GmbH, ended a remarkable 20-year tenure that yielded 14 world championship titles across both drivers’ and constructors’ standings.
The announcement followed a challenging start to the 2025 season, during which Red Bull’s once-dominant form began to falter. Despite flashes of competitiveness, the team struggled to maintain the relentless edge that had defined its most successful years. Ultimately, the company’s senior leadership opted for change, appointing Racing Bulls boss Laurent Mekies as Horner’s replacement.
Speaking in a specially recorded interview for the latest season of Drive to Survive, Horner detailed the sequence of events that led to his departure. According to him, the weekend at Silverstone offered little indication of what was to come.
After the Austrian Grand Prix, Red Bull arrived at the British round with cautious optimism. Reigning champion Max Verstappen secured pole position in qualifying, raising hopes of a strong home-race result for the team. However, the race itself proved more difficult, with Verstappen eventually finishing fifth — a respectable result by many standards, but below the lofty expectations Red Bull had set in previous seasons.
Just a day later, Horner received a call requesting his presence at a meeting in London. It was there, he revealed, that he was informed he would no longer be operationally involved in running the Formula 1 team with immediate effect.

The emotional impact was immediate. Horner admitted that his first reaction was one of anger and disbelief. Having poured his energy and ambition into the project since 2005, he struggled with the idea that something so central to his life had been taken away without his consent.

Despite acknowledging that the team’s performance in 2025 had not matched previous heights, Horner defended his commitment. He insisted that he had always given his best for the organization and the people within it, even as results became harder to secure in an increasingly competitive field.
Since his exit, Horner has largely stayed out of the spotlight. However, reports suggest he remains keen to return to the Formula 1 paddock — though not in a conventional employee role. Instead, he is believed to be exploring opportunities that would allow him to take on a team ownership position, granting him greater autonomy and long-term control.
