2026 Chinese Grand Prix – Sprint Qualifying Report
George Russell delivered a commanding performance to secure his first-ever Sprint pole position at the Chinese Grand Prix, leading a dominant session for Mercedes at the Shanghai International Circuit. The British driver continued the strong momentum he has shown throughout the race weekend, topping every session so far and confirming Mercedes’ impressive pace under the 2026 Formula One regulations.
Russell set the benchmark during the decisive SQ3 segment with a blistering lap time of 1:31.520, putting himself comfortably at the top of the leaderboard. His effort placed him 0.360 seconds ahead of his teammate Kimi Antonelli, ensuring a Mercedes lockout on the front row for the sprint race.
The lap came on Russell’s first attempt in the final phase of qualifying and ultimately proved unbeatable. Several drivers attempted to challenge the time on their final runs, but none were able to surpass the Mercedes driver’s benchmark. Russell himself attempted to improve during the final minutes of the session but failed to better his initial lap, though it remained sufficient to secure pole.
Mercedes Dominate Sprint Qualifying
The qualifying result highlighted Mercedes’ impressive early-season performance, with rookie sensation Kimi Antonelli continuing to show remarkable pace alongside Russell. Antonelli improved slightly during his second attempt in SQ3 but still fell short of Russell’s pole time, leaving him second on the grid for the sprint race.
Despite his strong result, Antonelli’s position is not yet fully secure. The young Italian driver has been summoned by the stewards for a potential impeding incident involving McLaren’s Lando Norris earlier in the session. Norris had to take evasive action while starting a flying lap, which may result in a penalty depending on the stewards’ verdict.
Norris Improves Late to Take Third
McLaren’s Lando Norris managed to climb into the top three during the closing stages of the session. His final lap pushed him ahead of Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton, moving Norris into third place and demoting Hamilton to fourth.
Hamilton’s result still represents a strong showing for Ferrari, with the seven-time world champion remaining close to the McLaren driver in lap time. Norris’ teammate Oscar Piastri completed the top five, giving McLaren a solid double presence near the front of the grid.
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc qualified sixth, slightly off the pace of the leading group but still within a competitive range for the sprint race.
Midfield Battles and Investigations
Further down the order, Pierre Gasly secured seventh place for Alpine, though his result is also under scrutiny. Gasly is being investigated for blocking Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who ultimately qualified eighth after struggling to extract maximum performance from his car during the session.
Verstappen’s position marks a disappointing qualifying for the reigning champion and Red Bull, who appear to be lacking pace compared to Mercedes and McLaren this weekend.
Behind Verstappen, Oliver Bearman delivered an impressive performance for Haas to claim ninth position, while Red Bull junior Isack Hadjar rounded out the top ten.
Difficult Session for Aston Martin and Cadillac
At the lower end of the grid, Aston Martin endured a challenging session, with Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll qualifying nineteenth and twentieth respectively.
Meanwhile, Cadillac struggled significantly, with Valtteri Bottas finishing twenty-first and Sergio Pérez at the bottom of the classification after failing to set a competitive time.
With the sprint race grid nearly finalized, attention now turns to the stewards’ investigations, which could potentially reshuffle positions before the sprint race begins.
