In a dramatic twist that’s sent shockwaves through the Formula 1 world, 17-year-old prodigy Kimi Antonelli has officially secured a future seat with Mercedes-AMG Petronas, marking one of the sport’s boldest moves in years. But just as the champagne was about to pop, there’s a catch — he’s banned from driving it… for now.
Antonelli, seen by many as Mercedes’ next superstar, is being groomed to potentially replace Lewis Hamilton, who’s heading to Ferrari in 2025. The young Italian has shown raw speed and maturity beyond his age, dominating in junior categories and testing privately for Mercedes. Yet despite the hype, FIA super license regulations are standing in his way.
What’s the problem?
FIA rules state that a driver must be 18 years old and hold a valid super license to race in Formula 1. Antonelli, born in August 2006, won’t be eligible until later this year — meaning that although the contract is secured and the car is waiting, he can’t legally drive in a Grand Prix until then.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff called it “a strategic move for the future,” hinting that the team is playing the long game. “Kimi is a rare talent,” Wolff said. “He’s got everything it takes, and when the time comes, he’ll be ready.”
For now, Antonelli will continue testing and competing in Formula 2, gaining valuable experience under the watchful eye of Mercedes. The team is reportedly exploring an early debut later in the 2025 season, depending on his age and performance.
So while Antonelli’s name is already etched on the next Silver Arrow, the engine will have to stay silent — at least for a few more months. The countdown begins.
