Four-time Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen came close to landing himself in trouble with the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) once again after nearly using inappropriate language during an official press conference ahead of the Chinese Grand Prix.
The Dutch driver, who races for Red Bull Racing, has previously been penalized for swearing during FIA media sessions, and the governing body still maintains strict expectations when it comes to drivers’ conduct in televised press conferences. Although some of the rules regarding language have been slightly relaxed in recent years, drivers are still expected to keep their comments professional during official events.
Red Bull Hoping for Redemption After Difficult Season Opener
Verstappen and his team arrived in China hoping to recover from a disappointing start to the 2026 Formula 1 season at the Australian Grand Prix. The opening race weekend proved frustrating for Red Bull, with the team managing to collect just eight points overall.
Things went wrong early for Verstappen when he suffered a shock elimination in the first segment of qualifying (Q1). The early exit left the reigning champion with a mountain to climb on race day. Despite the setback, Verstappen managed to salvage some valuable points by fighting his way back through the field to finish in sixth place.
Meanwhile, Red Bull’s new recruit Isack Hadjar endured heartbreak during the race. The young driver was running strongly and even appeared to be in contention for a podium finish before his hopes were dashed by a sudden engine failure. The mechanical issue forced him to retire from the race, adding to the team’s frustrating start to the year.
With pressure mounting, the team is eager to deliver a much stronger performance at the Shanghai International Circuit this weekend.
Verstappen Nearly Slips Up During Press Conference
Ahead of the Chinese Grand Prix, Verstappen appeared alongside several fellow drivers during an official FIA press conference. While discussing his feelings about the current season and Red Bull’s performance, the Dutchman nearly let a swear word slip out before quickly catching himself mid-sentence.
The moment sparked laughter among those present and highlighted the lingering sensitivity surrounding language in FIA media appearances.
Verstappen began explaining his complicated feelings about the team’s situation this season. He admitted that while he enjoys working with the people around him, the current performance of the car has made driving less enjoyable than he would like.
At one point in the conversation, he stopped himself just before finishing a phrase that might have included a swear word, jokingly acknowledging that he had to be careful because of potential fines.
A Lighthearted Debate Over FIA Fines
The near slip prompted a humorous exchange between Verstappen and Brazilian driver Gabriel Bortoleto, who was also part of the discussion.
Verstappen jokingly wondered how much the FIA might fine him if he actually completed the swear word. He suggested that the penalty could be around €5,000.
Bortoleto then teased that his own fine for the same offence would be far smaller, claiming it might only be about €100. Verstappen laughed at the idea and insisted that the higher figure would probably apply specifically to him.
Bortoleto continued the playful banter by joking that the €5,000 penalty might only exist for Verstappen, given his history with the FIA over similar incidents.
The Red Bull star quickly clarified that he was merely questioning whether the rules applied to a single word or to an entire sentence, before adding that he preferred not to find out the hard way.
A Reminder of His Previous FIA Punishment
The situation brought back memories of Verstappen’s previous clash with the FIA over language. During a press conference ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix in 2024, he used explicit language while describing his car’s performance.
The FIA responded by issuing what was described as a “community service–style” penalty. The punishment required Verstappen to take part in activities linked to the sport, serving as a reminder that drivers are expected to act as ambassadors for Formula 1 during official events.
Although the rules around swearing have since been adjusted slightly, the governing body still discourages the use of strong language in media environments, especially during live broadcasts.
Verstappen Still Committed to Red Bull’s Future
Despite the current challenges, Verstappen made it clear that he has no desire to leave Red Bull. He emphasized that he enjoys working with the team members and the engine department, even if the current car is not performing at the level he would like.
The Dutch driver revealed that discussions have already taken place between himself, Formula One Management, and the FIA about ongoing improvements in the sport. He expressed hope that those conversations will lead to positive changes moving forward.
Another Big Racing Challenge on the Horizon
Beyond Formula 1, Verstappen is also preparing for a major endurance racing challenge later this year. The champion recently confirmed that he intends to compete in the legendary 24 Hours of Nürburgring.
The iconic endurance race is one of the most demanding events in motorsport, held at the historic Nürburgring circuit in Germany. Verstappen’s participation has already generated significant excitement among fans who are eager to see how the F1 superstar performs in the grueling 24-hour contest.
For now, however, his focus remains firmly on bouncing back at the Chinese Grand Prix — and making sure he keeps his language in check while doing so.
