The FIA has officially handed out a penalty following an incident that occurred between reigning Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen and rookie Isack Hadjar during the Chinese Grand Prix weekend. Verstappen, who has clinched four drivers’ titles in his career, has encountered an unsteady beginning to the current season and has publicly expressed some doubts about Red Bull’s overall competitiveness heading into 2025.
Interestingly, the Red Bull sister team, Racing Bulls, seemed to outperform expectations during the Chinese GP. The team, which is home to rising talents Isack Hadjar and Yuki Tsunoda, put on an impressive display in qualifying. Both drivers managed to secure positions within the top ten, with Hadjar qualifying in seventh and Tsunoda closely behind in ninth place, surpassing what many had anticipated from the junior outfit.
Despite this promising showing, Racing Bulls did not emerge from the weekend without incident. During the crucial Q3 session on Saturday, the team made a costly error involving the release of Hadjar from the pit lane. In what has now been officially ruled as an unsafe release, Hadjar was sent out onto the track just as Verstappen was making his way through the pit lane, resulting in a close call between the two drivers. While there was no contact or significant damage caused by the incident, the FIA deemed the maneuver unsafe and has penalized Racing Bulls with a €5,000 fine.
The FIA clarified their reasoning, stating that the release endangered not only Verstappen but also other personnel within the pit lane environment. The governing body typically enforces strict regulations regarding pit lane safety, and this instance was no exception. The stewards concluded that Racing Bulls’ timing in releasing Hadjar was improper and compromised the safety of others.
While Racing Bulls’ performance on the track was one of their best of the season so far, this pit lane error put a blemish on an otherwise strong weekend. The team had shown considerable promise, especially when compared to the reigning champions Red Bull Racing, who appear to be struggling to find their footing in the early stages of this campaign. Verstappen himself has been candid about his frustrations with the car’s setup and overall pace relative to competitors.
For Hadjar, the incident is a reminder of the high-pressure environment of Formula 1, especially as a rookie navigating the challenges of top-tier racing. However, the young French driver has impressed many with his pace and composure during his debut season so far.
