In anticipation of the 2025 Formula 1 season, the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) has intensified its efforts to eliminate the contentious use of flexible wings, commonly referred to as “flexi-wings,” which have been a focal point in recent seasons. These aerodynamic components, designed to flex at high speeds, can provide teams with a significant performance advantage by reducing drag and increasing straight-line speed. However, such designs have sparked debates regarding their compliance with the sport’s technical regulations.

FIA’s Enhanced Technical Directives

To address these concerns, the FIA has revised Technical Directive 034 (TD034), initially introduced during the 2024 Belgian Grand Prix. This update mandates that teams equip their cars with rearward-facing cameras specifically aimed at monitoring the flexing of rear wings. Unlike the previous iteration, which focused on front wings, the current directive shifts attention to the rear aerodynamic structures. This measure aims to ensure that all teams adhere to the established rigidity standards, thereby promoting fair competition. The FIA emphasized its commitment by stating, “Following further analysis carried out by the FIA Single Seater Department after the conclusion of the 2024 season, we are committed to ensure that bodywork flexibility is no longer a point of contention for the 2025 season.”

In addition to the camera installations, the FIA will implement more stringent beam wing deflection tests starting from the season opener in Australia. These tests are designed to detect and deter any attempts by teams to exploit aerodynamic flexibility beyond the permissible limits. Furthermore, additional front wing tests are scheduled to be introduced at the Spanish Grand Prix, the ninth round of the championship. This phased approach allows teams sufficient time to adjust their designs and ensures that no components are rendered obsolete prematurely.

Controversies Surrounding ‘Mini-DRS’ Mechanisms

The term “mini-DRS” has emerged within the paddock to describe certain rear wing designs that mimic the effects of the Drag Reduction System (DRS) without its activation. Notably, McLaren’s rear wing design during the 2024 season came under scrutiny for its ability to flex under aerodynamic load, effectively reducing drag and providing a speed advantage on straights. This design was particularly highlighted following Oscar Piastri’s victory at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, where rivals observed significant flexing of the rear wing, leading to allegations of McLaren exploiting a “grey area” in the regulations.

Red Bull’s Technical Director, Pierre Wache, was vocal about his discontent regarding McLaren’s rear wing design. He characterized the design as extending beyond a mere regulatory grey area, implying that it contravened the intended spirit of the rules. Wache’s concerns were echoed by other teams, notably Ferrari, who also questioned the legality of McLaren’s aerodynamic approach.

McLaren’s Response and FIA’s Position

In response to the allegations, McLaren maintained that their rear wing design complied with the existing regulations and had passed all FIA-mandated tests. Team Principal Andrea Stella expressed confidence that the FIA’s forthcoming clampdown on flexible wings would not pose any issues for McLaren, stating that it was “no headache at all.”  This assertion underscores McLaren’s stance that their designs operate within the legal framework and that they are prepared to adapt to any regulatory changes.

The FIA, after conducting thorough analyses, acknowledged the concerns raised by various teams but confirmed that all front wings inspected up to that point had complied with the 2024 regulations. Despite informal concerns raised after the Italian Grand Prix, the FIA confirmed that all front wings had passed inspections.  This position reflects the complexities involved in regulating aerodynamic components, where designs can exploit the fine line between innovation and regulatory infringement.

Implications for the 2025 Season

The FIA’s proactive measures to tighten regulations on wing flexibility are poised to have significant implications for the 2025 season. Teams that previously capitalized on flexible aerodynamic components may need to revise their designs to comply with the new, more stringent tests. This shift could potentially alter the competitive landscape, as aerodynamic efficiency plays a crucial role in overall performance.

Red Bull, while supportive of the FIA’s crackdown on flexi-wings, has raised questions about the timeline for implementing stricter front wing tests. Team Principal Christian Horner welcomed the FIA’s decision but expressed concerns regarding the phased introduction of the tests, suggesting that a more immediate implementation could ensure uniform compliance across all teams.

As the season approaches, teams are expected to adapt their aerodynamic strategies to align with the updated regulations. The effectiveness of the FIA’s measures in curbing the use of flexible wings will be closely monitored, as will the responses from teams that have previously been at the center of such controversies. The overarching goal remains to uphold the integrity of the sport by ensuring that all competitors operate within the defined technical boundaries, thereby fostering fair and competitive racing.
