The starting grid for the 2026 Chinese Grand Prix has delivered a historic moment for Formula 1, with teenage sensation Kimi Antonelli securing pole position for the race at the Shanghai International Circuit. The young Italian driver will lead the field when the lights go out, making him the youngest driver in Formula 1 history to start a World Championship Grand Prix from pole position.

Antonelli’s remarkable achievement places him ahead of his more experienced rivals and writes his name into the record books. The Mercedes rookie has broken the previous record held by four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel, who was previously the youngest pole-sitter after claiming pole during the 2008 Italian Grand Prix. Antonelli surpasses Vettel’s record by nearly three years, highlighting just how extraordinary his accomplishment is.

The pole position also underlines the strong performance of Mercedes this weekend in China. Antonelli will be joined on the front row by his teammate George Russell, giving the Silver Arrows a commanding 1–2 start for Sunday’s race. Russell, who has already shown impressive form early in the 2026 season, will be eager to challenge his teammate for the lead as soon as the race begins.

Behind the Mercedes duo sits a formidable pairing from Ferrari. Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton lines up in third position, continuing to show strong pace since his high-profile move to Ferrari. Alongside him in fourth is teammate Charles Leclerc, giving Ferrari a promising opportunity to pressure Mercedes at the front of the field.

The third row of the grid will be occupied entirely by drivers from McLaren. Oscar Piastri starts fifth, just ahead of teammate and reigning world champion Lando Norris in sixth. Both drivers have demonstrated strong race pace this season and could prove to be serious contenders if the front-runners encounter any difficulties during the race.

Further down the grid, Pierre Gasly will start seventh for Alpine after a solid qualifying performance. Meanwhile, reigning four-time world champion Max Verstappen endured a difficult weekend and could only manage eighth place for Red Bull Racing. Verstappen’s position reflects a challenging outing for the team, which has struggled to find its usual competitive edge at the Shanghai circuit.

Red Bull’s difficulties were further highlighted by the ninth-place start of rookie Isack Hadjar, while Oliver Bearman rounds out the top ten for Haas F1 Team.

The midfield battle looks equally intriguing, with experienced drivers such as Nico Hulkenberg and Esteban Ocon looking to move forward during the race. Young talents including Franco Colapinto, Liam Lawson, and Arvid Lindblad will also aim to capitalize on any opportunities that arise in the tightly packed midfield.
