Mercedes Dominate Qualifying with Front-Row Lockout as Verstappen Starts Last in 2026 Australian Grand Prix
The starting grid for the season-opening Australian Grand Prix has delivered major surprises, with George Russell and Kimi Antonelli powering Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team to a commanding front-row lockout.
In the first qualifying session of Formula 1’s new technical era, Mercedes stunned the paddock by unleashing the full potential of their W17 challenger. Russell secured pole position while his young teammate Antonelli followed closely in second, giving the Silver Arrows the perfect start to the 2026 campaign.
The margin between Mercedes and the rest of the field was significant. Rookie Isack Hadjar, driving for Red Bull Racing, qualified third but was nearly eight-tenths of a second slower than Russell’s pole time. Despite the gap, Hadjar’s performance still represented an impressive effort, placing him at the front of the chasing pack.
Behind the leading trio, Charles Leclerc secured fourth place for Scuderia Ferrari, continuing the Italian team’s competitive start to the season. The Monegasque driver will share the third row with Australian star Oscar Piastri, who delighted the home crowd by qualifying fifth for McLaren Formula 1 Team.
Reigning world champion Lando Norris will start just behind his teammate in sixth place. While Norris was expected to challenge for pole after his dominant 2025 season, McLaren appeared slightly off the pace compared with Mercedes in Melbourne.
Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, now racing in Ferrari colours, will begin the race from seventh on the grid. The British driver produced a solid qualifying effort but was unable to match the pace shown by the front runners.
Further back, several young talents made their mark. Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad delivered strong performances for Racing Bulls, locking out eighth and ninth positions respectively. Meanwhile, Gabriel Bortoleto completed the top ten for Audi Formula 1 Team.
However, the biggest shock of the session involved four-time world champion Max Verstappen. The Dutch driver will start from the very back of the grid after suffering a dramatic crash during Q1. Reports indicated the incident was triggered by a technical issue on his car, leaving Verstappen unable to continue in the session and placing him 20th for Sunday’s race.
Elsewhere, Fernando Alonso endured a disappointing qualifying session for Aston Martin F1 Team, ending up 17th on the grid. Despite the setback, Alonso still managed to out-qualify both drivers from the new Cadillac Formula 1 Team, Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas, who will start near the back.
The grid also includes notable names such as Carlos Sainz, now racing for Williams Racing, and Lance Stroll, both of whom will have plenty of work to do when the lights go out.
With Mercedes appearing dominant, McLaren and Ferrari chasing closely behind, and Verstappen facing the difficult challenge of fighting from the rear, the stage is set for an unpredictable and dramatic opening race of the season in Melbourne.
It is important to note that the grid remains provisional until it receives final confirmation from the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA).
