Lewis Hamilton has been notably snubbed by his Formula 1 rivals following a difficult 2024 season, as he prepares to leave Mercedes. The seven-time world champion recently completed his final race with the team at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, bringing an end to a successful partnership that secured six drivers’ championships and eight constructors’ titles. Hamilton is set to join Ferrari in hopes of ending his career on a high note, after struggling in recent years with Mercedes.
Hamilton’s 2024 campaign proved especially challenging. Although he managed two unexpected wins, he was consistently outperformed by his teammate, George Russell, in both qualifying and races. Hamilton ended the season in seventh place in the driver standings, a significant drop from his third-place finish in 2023 despite Mercedes’ performance issues and Red Bull’s dominance. His results in 2024 seemed to decline after announcing his move to Ferrari, with some underwhelming performances and a visibly downbeat attitude at races.
This dip in form was reflected in a poll conducted on the official F1 website, where drivers ranked the top 10 performers of the season. Max Verstappen topped the list, followed by Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc, who both saw significant improvement from the previous year. George Russell, who was not in the top 10 last year, finished fourth, and Oscar Piastri moved up three places to secure fifth.
However, the biggest surprise was Hamilton’s fall from second in 2023 to 10th place in 2024, an eight-position drop. This ranking highlighted Hamilton’s struggles throughout the season and how his peers viewed his performance. Notably, both Verstappen and Hamilton abstained from voting, with drivers like Fernando Alonso, Carlos Sainz, and George Russell participating in the poll.
