Helmut Marko has revealed the reasoning behind a firm decision to prevent Max Verstappen from attempting one of motorsport’s most dangerous challenges — driving a modern Formula 1 car around the fearsome Nürburgring Nordschleife.
As Verstappen prepares to return to the iconic German circuit this weekend in a different racing category, Marko reflected on the moment he intervened to block what he considered an unnecessarily high-risk idea. Often referred to as the “Green Hell,” the Nordschleife is notorious for its narrow layout, high-speed sections, and limited run-off areas, making it one of the most demanding tracks in the world.
Marko explained that Verstappen’s interest in the circuit goes back several years. However, the Dutch driver’s ambitions extended far beyond competing in standard endurance or GT machinery. At one stage, Verstappen was reportedly eager to take a Red Bull Formula 1 car onto the Nordschleife for a demonstration run — a proposal that immediately raised serious safety concerns within the team.
According to Marko, the idea was never seriously considered. Modern Formula 1 cars are built for wide, purpose-designed circuits with advanced safety infrastructure, which stands in stark contrast to the unpredictable and unforgiving nature of the Nordschleife. Sending such a car onto the historic track would have posed significant risks, both to the driver and the team.
Marko also pointed to the inspiration behind Verstappen’s ambition. The remarkable 2018 lap record set by Timo Bernhard in the Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo appears to have played a key role. That lap remains one of the most extraordinary achievements in motorsport, highlighting the extreme performance potential of cutting-edge racing machinery around the circuit.
It is believed Verstappen was intrigued by the possibility of surpassing that benchmark in a Formula 1 car — a thrilling concept, but one that Marko deemed far too dangerous. The combination of extreme speeds, tight corners, and minimal margin for error ultimately led to a clear decision: the risk simply outweighed the reward.
Marko’s comments underline Red Bull’s cautious approach when it comes to driver safety, even when dealing with one of Formula 1’s most fearless competitors.
