The 2026 Chinese Grand Prix delivered another dramatic chapter for Red Bull Racing, with young driver Isack Hadjar admitting he was completely caught off guard after a shocking opening-lap spin that nearly ended his race.
Despite eventually salvaging points with an eighth-place finish, Hadjar’s race at the Shanghai International Circuit was anything but smooth. The French rookie endured a tense and unpredictable afternoon after losing control of his car during a fierce early battle with Oliver Bearman.
Opening Lap Chaos
The drama unfolded on the very first lap when Hadjar attempted to defend his position against Bearman. As the cars entered Turn 13 in the high-speed final sector, Hadjar suddenly lost control of the car, spinning a full 180 degrees.
The moment was particularly frightening because Bearman was directly behind him at high speed. Fortunately, the British driver reacted instantly and managed to avoid contact, preventing what could easily have been a race-ending collision for both drivers.

For the rest of the race, Hadjar had to battle a difficult car that seemed unwilling to cooperate. While he managed to steadily climb back through the field, he admitted that controlling the car remained a constant challenge.
Despite those struggles, he eventually secured eighth place, earning valuable points and opening his account for the 2026 Formula 1 season.
Under normal circumstances, a points finish would be considered a positive result for a young driver. However, the wider situation inside the Red Bull camp meant the mood remained tense rather than celebratory.
Red Bull’s Difficult Weekend
Hadjar ultimately became the only driver from Red Bull Racing to score points in Shanghai. Team leader Max Verstappen endured a disastrous race that ended in retirement after his car developed a mechanical problem.
The four-time world champion had been on track to finish inside the points before he was forced to pull into the pit lane and abandon the race.
Throughout the weekend, Verstappen had also been vocal about the difficult handling characteristics of the RB22, suggesting that the team’s car currently lacks the balance and performance required to compete at the front.

Hadjar acknowledged that the team currently appears limited by the performance of its package. While the young driver fought hard to secure a points finish, he admitted there was little more the team could realistically achieve with the car in its current form.
