Lando Norris Fires Back at Max Verstappen, Accusing Him of Being ‘Clueless’ and Talking ‘Nonsense’ in Heated Title Battle
McLaren driver Lando Norris has sharply criticized Max Verstappen, calling the Red Bull star’s recent comments “nonsense” and suggesting that the reigning champion is “clueless” about several aspects of the 2025 title fight. With just one race left in a fiercely contested season, tensions between the two top contenders — along with Norris’s teammate, Oscar Piastri — have reached boiling point.
For much of the year, Piastri held the championship lead, displaying exceptional consistency over the first 15 rounds. But as the season progressed, Norris surged ahead, stringing together a series of strong performances that ultimately elevated him to the top of the standings heading into the final race of the year. However, Verstappen’s victory at the Qatar Grand Prix has tightened the championship dramatically, leaving all three drivers within striking distance of the title.

Verstappen Triggers the War of Words
In Qatar, Verstappen reignited the verbal sparring by suggesting that he would have already sealed the world championship if he were driving the McLaren MCL39. The Dutchman argued that he was only still mathematically in contention because of “mistakes” made by Norris and Piastri over the course of the season.
Coming from a four-time world champion, Verstappen’s comments carried weight — but they also carried a sting. His remarks were perceived as dismissive toward the hard work McLaren’s drivers have put in to transform themselves into genuine title challengers.
Speaking to the press before the weekend’s track action, Verstappen confidently declared that he believed he would have secured the championship “a long time ago” if he were behind the wheel of a car as strong as McLaren’s current machine. Norris Responds: ‘Max Talks a Lot of Nonsense’
After delivering a strong performance in the sprint race in Qatar, Norris was asked to comment on Verstappen’s remarks — and he didn’t hold back.
Norris started by acknowledging Verstappen’s achievements, making it clear that he respects the Dutchman’s success.
“He’s very welcome to say everything he wants,” Norris began. “To be honest, he’s earned the right — he’s won four world championships.”
But the respect ended there.
Norris went on to describe Verstappen as someone who often has a good understanding of the sport — but not always.
“Max generally has a good clue about a lot of things,” he said. “But there are also a lot of things he doesn’t have much of a clue about.”
In a particularly sharp comment aimed not only at Verstappen but also at the Red Bull team culture, Norris added:
“It’s also Red Bull’s way of going about things — this aggressive nature, and just talking nonsense a lot of the time.”
The McLaren driver’s response was measured but firm, reflecting both irritation and a desire to stand his ground. With the championship on the line, Norris was clearly unwilling to let Verstappen’s insinuations go unchallenged.
