Former Formula 1 chief Bernie Ecclestone has expressed skepticism about Lewis Hamilton’s recent move to Ferrari, suggesting that the seven-time world champion may struggle to find success with the Italian team. Hamilton, who turned 40 in January, left Mercedes after a 12-year tenure to join Ferrari in pursuit of a record-breaking eighth Drivers’ World Championship.
Ecclestone, now 96, believes that Hamilton’s age and prolonged career in F1 could hinder his performance at Ferrari. He remarked, “It’s not the age with drivers, it’s how long they have been doing the same thing. I have thought with Lewis, ‘He’s getting tired. He has lost motivation.’ If he had never won a world championship, it might be different, because then there would be an incentive to win one. But he has won seven.”
The former F1 CEO also questioned the dynamics within Ferrari, particularly concerning Hamilton’s relationship with his new teammate, Charles Leclerc. Leclerc, 27, is considered a rising star and a potential future champion. Ecclestone emphasized Ferrari’s strong backing of Leclerc, stating, “They will back Charles Leclerc. He’s quick and has grown up there. They won’t dump him for anyone.”
Ecclestone further speculated that Ferrari’s decision to sign Hamilton might have been driven by ego. He suggested that Ferrari Chairman John Elkann viewed acquiring Hamilton as a significant achievement, but now might be reconsidering the decision. “For John Elkann, it was a big ego thing. He thought he had captured the best guy the world had ever seen. When he signed him there was nothing to indicate he was wrong in that assessment. Whether he is still happy with that is another story. Only time will tell,” Ecclestone commented.
Reflecting on Hamilton’s illustrious career, Ecclestone acknowledged his achievements but hinted that it might be time for him to consider stepping away from the sport. “If Lewis is fading, which I don’t like to see, he should go away and do something else, and do a good job at it,” he advised.
Hamilton’s move to Ferrari has been one of the most talked-about events during the winter break. His arrival at Maranello has generated significant excitement among the Tifosi, as they anticipate the combination of the sport’s most successful driver with its most storied team.
However, history presents challenges for Hamilton. Only three drivers have won the World Championship after the age of 40, with the most recent being Sir Jack Brabham 60 years ago. Hamilton’s current contract with Ferrari spans up to three seasons, but Ecclestone is doubtful he will remain that long. “He won’t last that long,” Ecclestone predicted.
