Chinese Grand Prix Sprint Qualifying: Mercedes Dominate as Verstappen Endures Shanghai Nightmare
Sprint qualifying for the 2026 Chinese Grand Prix delivered high drama on Friday at the Shanghai International Circuit, as Mercedes continued their impressive start to the new Formula 1 season.
The Silver Arrows secured a dominant front-row lockout, with George Russell claiming pole position for the sprint race ahead of his teammate Kimi Antonelli. Their commanding performance reinforced Mercedes’ strong early-season form under the sport’s new power unit regulations.
Russell produced a superb lap of 1:31.520 during the final sprint qualifying segment (SQ3), putting nearly three tenths of a second between himself and Antonelli. The result means Mercedes will start the sprint race in the strongest possible position, while their closest challengers will line up just behind them.
However, the order at the front could still change. Antonelli is currently under investigation by race stewards for a potential impeding incident involving Lando Norris earlier in the session. If a penalty is applied, it could promote Norris – or even Lewis Hamilton – further up the sprint grid.
Ferrari Shows Signs of Recovery
After struggling during the earlier practice session, Ferrari appeared to make significant progress during sprint qualifying. Hamilton delivered an impressive lap that placed him fourth, splitting the McLaren drivers and finishing only around six tenths behind Antonelli’s time.
The improvement came after Ferrari abandoned its experimental rear wing design, nicknamed the “Macarena” system. The team removed the component between sessions, citing reliability concerns rather than outright performance issues.
Once the modification was taken off the car, both Ferrari drivers showed stronger pace. Charles Leclerc also reached SQ3, ultimately qualifying sixth behind McLaren’s Oscar Piastri.
Verstappen’s Difficult Session
While Mercedes celebrated at the front, the session proved to be a nightmare for reigning world champion Max Verstappen.
The Red Bull driver struggled for pace throughout the session and only just managed to escape elimination in SQ2 by less than a tenth of a second. His difficulties continued in the final segment, where he could do no better than eighth place on the grid.
Verstappen’s final lap left him a staggering 1.734 seconds behind Russell’s pole time, highlighting the scale of Red Bull’s struggles in Shanghai. His teammate Isack Hadjar also endured a tough session and qualified tenth, further underlining the team’s lack of competitiveness during sprint qualifying.
Early Eliminations and Technical Problems
Several teams faced disappointment even earlier in the session. Both Aston Martin drivers were eliminated in SQ1, with veteran Fernando Alonso and teammate Lance Stroll finishing near the bottom of the timesheets.
The new Cadillac team also experienced problems before the session truly began. Sergio Perez was unable to participate in sprint qualifying after suffering a fuel system issue that had already limited his running during practice earlier in the day. His teammate Valtteri Bottas also exited in SQ1.
Meanwhile, the Williams pair of Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon were eliminated in the first segment as well. Reports suggested the team’s car was running overweight, preventing both drivers from progressing further into SQ2.
Midfield Battles
Behind the top teams, the midfield fight remained extremely competitive. Alpine’s Pierre Gasly produced a strong performance to qualify seventh, while Haas rookie Oliver Bearman impressed by reaching SQ3 and securing ninth place on the grid.
Drivers such as Nico Hulkenberg, Esteban Ocon, and Liam Lawson narrowly missed out on the final qualifying segment after being eliminated in SQ2.
With the sprint race set to take place on Saturday, Mercedes will be aiming to convert their front-row lockout into maximum points. However, with McLaren and Ferrari close behind—and a potential penalty still looming over Antonelli—the battle at the front of the grid remains far from settled.
