McLaren Driver Joins Rival Team as F1 Grid Finalizes for 2025 Season
The Formula 1 grid for the 2025 season is now complete, with several high-profile team changes shaking up the paddock. Among the notable moves is McLaren parting ways with one of their longest-serving drivers, who has now joined a rival team.
McLaren had a stellar 2024 campaign, clinching the constructors’ championship for the first time since 1998. Although their drivers, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, fell short of claiming the drivers’ championship—losing out to the dominance of Max Verstappen—there was plenty for the Woking-based outfit to celebrate.

Williams Finalizes Driver Lineup
In addition to securing Carlos Sainz, Williams has also announced Oliver Turvey as their new test and development driver. Turvey, 37, joins the Grove-based team after spending an impressive 15 years in a similar role at McLaren. A Le Mans 24 Hours winner, Turvey brings a wealth of experience to Williams, as they look to climb back up the grid.
Speaking in an official team statement, Turvey expressed his excitement about joining one of Formula 1’s most historic teams. “I am delighted to join Williams. It’s an honor to have the opportunity to be part of such a legendary and successful team,” he said.
Turvey reflected on his admiration for Williams, recalling how watching Damon Hill claim the 1996 World Championship with the team inspired his own journey into motorsport. “The ambition and determination driving this project are incredibly inspiring, and I’m excited for the challenge ahead to help bring the team back to the top,” he added.
Turvey will be working closely with Williams’ drivers, Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz, whom he praised as two of the sport’s most talented competitors. He emphasized his commitment to using his experience as both a driver and engineer to support the team’s progress. This includes working extensively in the simulator to enhance car performance and assisting the race team in their efforts.
“I look forward to using my experience to help the team at Grove enhance the car’s performance and support Alex and Carlos on and off the track,” he continued. “It’s a privilege to contribute to this ambitious project.”
The appointment of Turvey marks a significant step for Williams as they aim to return to competitiveness in Formula 1. Team leadership, including James Vowles and Sven Smeets, expressed confidence in Turvey’s ability to add value to their efforts.
