Mercedes Under Investigation After Bizarre Pit Error Damages McLaren in Australian GP Qualifying
Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team is under investigation by Formula 1 race stewards following a strange and potentially dangerous mistake during qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix. The unusual incident occurred in the final moments of Q3 and ultimately forced race control to halt the session with a red flag.
The dramatic moment unfolded when Mercedes released rookie driver Kimi Antonelli from the garage with cooling fans still attached to his car. These large devices are normally used in the pit lane to regulate engine and brake temperatures before a car heads out onto the track. However, due to an apparent oversight by the team, the fans were not removed before Antonelli accelerated away from the pit box.
As the young Italian exited the pit lane and joined the circuit, the fans quickly detached from the car. One of them was flung off and ended up in a gravel trap near the edge of the track, while the second piece of equipment landed directly on the racing line shortly after Turn 2.
Moments later, Lando Norris approached the corner at high speed in his McLaren Formula 1 Team machine. With little time to react, Norris struck the stationary fan that had been left on the circuit. The impact shattered the device into hundreds of fragments, scattering debris across the track.
Immediately after the collision, Norris reported the incident over team radio, informing his engineers that he had hit an unknown object. Concerned about potential damage, he asked his team to carefully inspect the car once he returned to the pits.
