The motorsport world has been plunged into mourning following the tragic death of NASCAR legend Greg Biffle, who was killed alongside several members of his family in a fatal plane crash in North Carolina.
Biffle, aged 55, was travelling with his wife Cristina, daughter Emma, and young son Ryder when the aircraft went down while attempting to re-land at Statesville Regional Airport on Thursday. All seven people on board lost their lives in the incident.

In recognition of his contributions to the sport, he was named among the 75 greatest drivers in NASCAR history when the organisation celebrated its 75th anniversary.

After stepping away from full-time competition, Biffle remained closely connected to the sport and to his community. In recent years, he gained widespread admiration for his humanitarian efforts, particularly following the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene in North Carolina in 2024.
A licensed pilot, Biffle used his helicopter to carry out critical relief missions in the storm’s aftermath. Many of these locations were inaccessible by road or too dangerous for larger aircraft, making his efforts especially vital.

In the days following the tragedy, the families affected released a joint statement expressing their devastation and requesting privacy as they grieve.
“We are completely heartbroken by the loss of our loved ones,” the statement read. “This tragedy has left all of our families devastated beyond words.”
The message paid tribute to Biffle and his wife Cristina as devoted parents and committed philanthropists whose lives revolved around their children. Emma, Biffle’s daughter, was remembered as a kind-hearted person who was loved by many, while young Ryder was described as energetic, curious, and endlessly joyful.
The statement also honoured Dennis Dutton and his son Jack, noting how deeply they were cherished, as well as Craig Wadsworth, who was remembered as a much-loved figure within the NASCAR community.
“Each of them meant everything to us,” the families added. “Their absence leaves a void that cannot be measured. We are grateful for the compassion and support shown to us during this incredibly painful time.”

Tributes have poured in from across the motorsport world, with current drivers, Hall of Famers, former teammates, and teams sharing emotional messages online. Biffle’s longtime team Roush Racing, now known as RFK Racing, was among those to honour his legacy.
