Christian Horner’s Reign as Red Bull Team Principal Under Threat
Christian Horner, the longest-serving team principal in Formula 1, is facing a uncertain future at Red Bull Racing. Despite leading the team to six Constructors’ Championships and eight Drivers’ Championships, Horner’s position is reportedly under threat.
According to Austrian media outlet oe24, Horner’s tenure as team principal could come to an end as early as the next race in Imola. The report cites Red Bull’s disappointing start to the 2025 season, with the team struggling to match the pace of rivals McLaren.
Red Bull’s RB21 car has been criticized for its lack of performance and handling issues, with even star driver Max Verstappen unable to consistently challenge for victory. The team’s woes have been compounded by the ongoing saga surrounding the second driver seat, with Liam Lawson being dropped after just two races.
Horner has faced criticism and controversy throughout his career, including allegations of tension with other lead figures within the team. However, he has consistently maintained the backing of Red Bull’s majority owner.
The oe24 report suggests that two potential replacements for Horner have been identified: Franz Tost, the long-time team principal of Red Bull’s sister team, and Oliver Oakes, the recently departed team principal of Alpine.
Tost, an Austrian, has a long history with Red Bull, having led the sister team (formerly known as Toro Rosso and Alpha Tauri) from 2006 to 2023. Oakes, on the other hand, has recent experience in F1, having led Alpine until his surprise resignation last week.
Red Bull’s current struggles have left them third in the Constructors’ Championship, 141 points adrift of leaders McLaren. Verstappen, the team’s star driver, is third in the Drivers’ Championship, 32 points behind leader Oscar Piastri.
