Breaking News: F1 team in talks to replace driver- just two days after they hired him
In a surprise move, Alpine announced on Wednesday that rookie driver Jack Doohan has been let go after just six races into the 2025 season. The Australian driver’s seat had been under threat since before the start of the season, when Alpine signed Argentine driver Facundo Colapinto as their reserve driver. Colapinto, who impressed with Williams in the second half of 2024, will now take Doohan’s place behind the wheel, starting with next weekend’s Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at Imola.
Doohan’s failure to score a single point, combined with crashes in Australia, Japan, and Miami, ultimately sealed his fate. However, he will remain Alpine’s first-choice reserve driver, leaving the door open for a potential return to racing later in the season.
Colapinto’s promotion is not without its caveats, as he is only contracted to drive for the next five rounds. Alpine will reassess their driver lineup before the British Grand Prix in July, leaving Colapinto’s long-term future with the team uncertain.
Meanwhile, Alpine has been in talks with former Red Bull driver Sergio Perez, who is eyeing a return to Formula 1 after being sacked by Red Bull at the end of 2024. Perez’s contract was terminated after a disappointing season, despite teammate Max Verstappen winning the drivers’ championship.
