The artwork was a portrait of the 2019 Monaco Grand Prix, a race where Hamilton took pole position and dominated the event, which held special significance as it was just days after Mercedes’ Niki Lauda had passed away. In tribute, Mercedes ran a red halo on Hamilton’s car to honor Lauda. Hamilton wanted the focus of the painting to be on the car rather than on himself, and this piece was commissioned as a way of thanking the team for their years of collaboration.
Oz shared the details of the special project on his Instagram, revealing that every one of the 3,000 Mercedes GP employees received a print of the artwork. The original oil painting now hangs in Mercedes’ headquarters in Brackley, and Oz noted that no prints of the piece are available for commercial sale. Hamilton’s gesture reflects his deep appreciation for Mercedes, especially given the history he built with the team over the years, including his race wins and championship successes.
