Lewis Hamilton issues Ferrari apology at Bahrain Grand Prix
Seven-time Formula 1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton has issued an apology to his new team, Ferrari, following a below-par qualifying session at the Bahrain Grand Prix. The veteran driver could only manage a ninth-place finish in Saturday’s qualifying, falling well short of both his own expectations and those of the team.
Hamilton, who joined Ferrari for the 2025 season, came into the Bahrain weekend with renewed optimism. Ferrari had brought their first round of performance upgrades to the SF-25, raising hopes of a strong showing under the lights at the Bahrain International Circuit. However, Hamilton struggled to find pace throughout the session, failing to match the performance of his teammate, Charles Leclerc.
Leclerc, in contrast, delivered a strong qualifying performance, initially securing third on the grid. However, due to a one-place grid penalty issued to Mercedes driver George Russell for a procedural error in Q2, Leclerc will start Sunday’s race from the front row in second place. Hamilton’s final position of ninth leaves him with a challenging task ahead if he hopes to fight for significant points or a podium finish.
Speaking after the session, Hamilton expressed disappointment and took full responsibility for the result. “I just wasn’t good enough today,” he admitted. “The car had more potential than I was able to extract, and that’s on me. The team has done an incredible job bringing the first upgrades of the season, and I feel like I let them down.”
Despite the setback, Hamilton remained composed and focused on the long game. “There’s still a lot of racing to go, and I know we have a good car underneath us. We’ll regroup and try to make the most of tomorrow’s race. Anything can happen under the lights in Bahrain.”
Ferrari Team Principal Frédéric Vasseur offered his support, emphasizing that the team remains fully behind Hamilton. “Lewis is a world-class driver and a fighter. We know he’ll bounce back.”
As the Scuderia prepares for Sunday’s grand prix, expectations remain high for Leclerc, who has shown strong pace throughout the weekend. Hamilton, meanwhile, will look to make up ground in the race, aiming to begin his Ferrari chapter with a determined drive through the field.
