The British driver’s transition to Ferrari marks the beginning of a partnership between one of the sport’s most successful figures and the most iconic team in Formula 1 history. Hamilton, whose seven championships tie him with Ferrari legend Michael Schumacher, will team up with Charles Leclerc in what Ferrari hopes will be a championship-winning pairing.
Hamilton’s switch to Ferrari follows an incredibly successful 12-year stint with Mercedes, during which he claimed six drivers’ titles and 84 Grand Prix victories. This remarkable record made Hamilton and Mercedes the most successful driver-team combination in F1 history. However, the past few seasons have seen a decline in performance, with Hamilton securing only two wins in the last three years. The 2024 season, in particular, was a disappointing one for the British driver.
Despite his impressive track record, Hamilton’s move to Ferrari may not be as smooth as expected. Former Ferrari technical director John Barnard, who worked with the team in the 1980s and 1990s, has cautioned Hamilton about the intense pressure that comes with joining the Scuderia. Barnard suggested that while Hamilton is still a capable driver and knows how to win championships through consistent point scoring rather than by winning every race, he may face difficulties if the Ferrari car doesn’t suit him.
Barnard expressed concern over how the Italian media and Ferrari fans could react to Hamilton if he doesn’t perform at the highest level. “It doesn’t take long for them to turn on you,” he warned. He noted that Ferrari’s internal and external pressures could prove challenging for any driver, especially one stepping into the team with such high expectations. Barnard also questioned whether Hamilton would be as quick as Leclerc, highlighting the potential for friction between the two drivers, which could add another layer of difficulty to Hamilton’s transition.
With Ferrari looking for its first championship since 2008, the team’s hopes will now rest on the combination of Hamilton and Leclerc. However, Barnard’s comments underline the harsh reality of the scrutiny Ferrari faces, both internally and externally, and the added pressure Hamilton may face as he embarks on this new chapter of his illustrious
