Max Verstappen’s attempt to add an extra layer of excitement to his upcoming endurance racing outing has been turned down, despite growing anticipation around his participation in one of motorsport’s most iconic events.
The four-time Formula 1 world champion recently confirmed that he will compete in the legendary Nürburgring 24 Hours, scheduled to take place from May 14 to May 17. The timing of the race is particularly interesting, as it falls just one week before the Canadian Grand Prix, raising initial concerns about scheduling conflicts. However, adjustments made by organizers of the Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie (NLS) have helped ensure Verstappen can prepare adequately without compromising his Formula 1 commitments.
Verstappen is set to drive the No. 3 Mercedes-AMG GT3 car alongside an experienced lineup that includes Dani Juncadella, Jules Gounon, and Lucas Auer. To gear up for the demanding 24-hour race, he also plans to participate in the NLS2 event on March 21, which serves as a key preparation race ahead of the Japanese Grand Prix.
Despite the excitement surrounding his entry, Verstappen revealed that a personal request he made ahead of the event was ultimately rejected. The Dutch driver had hoped to perform a demonstration run in a modern Formula 1 car around the famous Nürburgring circuit. Such a showcase would have undoubtedly drawn global attention to the event and thrilled motorsport fans. However, speaking during a press conference ahead of the Chinese Grand Prix, Verstappen confirmed that the idea was not approved.
“That was not allowed, otherwise I would have done it already,” he said, making it clear that he had indeed proposed the idea but was denied permission.
Even without the demonstration run, Verstappen’s enthusiasm for the Nürburgring 24 Hours remains strong. He described the race as one of the finest in the world and expressed deep admiration for the circuit itself. Known for its challenging layout and unpredictable conditions, the Nürburgring Nordschleife has long been regarded as one of the most demanding tracks in motorsport.
Verstappen also noted that competing in a GT3 car is better suited to the circuit’s characteristics. According to him, driving anything faster—such as a modern Formula 1 car—could be too dangerous given the track’s narrow sections and high-speed corners. He emphasized that he has followed the event for years and has heard glowing reviews from friends who have previously raced there.
The Nürburgring holds a rich history in Formula 1. The Nordschleife famously hosted the German Grand Prix for decades, beginning in 1951. However, the circuit’s dangers were brought into sharp focus after Niki Lauda suffered a near-fatal crash there in 1976. This incident played a major role in Formula 1 moving away from the track.
A modern, safer version of the circuit was later constructed and reintroduced to Formula 1 on occasion, most recently hosting the Eifel Grand Prix, which was won by Lewis Hamilton. Over the years, there have also been special demonstration runs, including appearances by Nick Heidfeld, David Coulthard, and Sebastian Vettel in older F1 machinery.
Ultimately, modern Formula 1 cars are considered unsuitable for the Nordschleife due to safety concerns and the track’s uneven surface, which does not align with the precision demands of today’s ground-effect aerodynamics. Significant upgrades would be required to meet current safety standards.
Even so, Verstappen’s participation in the Nürburgring 24 Hours is set to be one of the standout moments of the motorsport calendar, as fans eagerly await to see how the reigning F1 champion performs in one of racing’s toughest endurance challenges.
