The Kansas City Chiefs receive another shocking piece of news against Broncos that could destabilize them and jeopardize their future
The Kansas City Chiefs are facing a potential crisis that could significantly impact their future, as rumors surface that both their offensive and defensive coordinators might be leaving. The New Orleans Saints, fresh off parting ways with head coach Dennis Allen, have set their sights on Chiefs’ offensive coordinator Matt Nagy as a candidate for their head coaching position. This development comes shortly after defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo hinted at the possibility of departing the Chiefs organization.
The Saints have been in turmoil for much of the 2024 season. After a dismal 2-7 start that placed them near the bottom of the NFC South standings, the team fired Dennis Allen on November 4. Interim head coach Darren Rizzi took over and managed to salvage some of the season, leading the Saints to a 3-4 record under his leadership. Despite the improved performance from quarterback Derek Carr and running back Alvin Kamara, the damage was already done, and the Saints were unable to secure a playoff spot.
With the team now looking toward the future, owner Gayle Benson and general manager Mickey Loomis have turned their attention to hiring a new permanent head coach. Their focus has reportedly fallen on Matt Nagy, the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator, who has played an instrumental role in helping quarterback Patrick Mahomes and the team’s high-powered offense thrive. Nagy originally joined the Chiefs as a quarterbacks coach and senior assistant, but he took on the role of offensive coordinator in 2023, bringing in new strategies to maximize the potential of Mahomes, tight end Travis Kelce, and the newly acquired wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins, as well as rookie Rashee Rice.
Nagy has a history with the Chiefs, having previously served as the team’s offensive coordinator from 2016-2017 before being hired as the head coach of the Chicago Bears. During his tenure with the Bears, Nagy led the team to two playoff appearances but was let go after his fourth season when the Bears finished with a disappointing 6-11 record. Despite the Bears’ struggles, Nagy was lauded for the strong team culture he built, and his success in Kansas City earned him a second opportunity to contribute to the Chiefs’ offensive success.
However, the Chiefs may not only lose Nagy. Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo has also expressed a desire to leave and pursue another head coaching opportunity. Spagnuolo has been with the Chiefs since 2019 and has overseen one of the league’s most effective defenses, helping the team secure multiple Super Bowl appearances. His departure would be a significant loss, particularly after the Chiefs signed head coach Andy Reid to a five-year contract extension last year, solidifying his long-term future with the team
