In a fresh wave of scrutiny over Formula 1’s track limits rules, the FIA has officially confirmed that both Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton were among several drivers to have lap times deleted during the Bahrain Grand Prix weekend.
The governing body released a statement highlighting “multiple breaches” of track limits, emphasizing that the issue continues to be a critical concern for race control and fairness in competition. Verstappen and Hamilton, two of the sport’s biggest names, each had laps deleted during qualifying and practice sessions due to exceeding track boundaries, particularly at Turn 4 and Turn 13—areas frequently monitored for potential advantages gained by leaving the prescribed racing surface.
The FIA reiterated its commitment to enforcing track limits consistently, regardless of driver status or team affiliation. “We are working closely with teams and drivers to improve compliance and avoid repeated infringements that compromise sporting integrity,” the statement read.
Bahrain’s high-speed layout and desert surroundings make it particularly prone to track limit violations, with wind and dust affecting car control. The FIA is reportedly reviewing new technologies and solutions, including additional sensors and AI-based monitoring, to manage the issue more efficiently in future races.
