The FIA has issued an official verdict following a dramatic incident between McLaren teammates Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri at the 2025 Canadian Grand Prix. The two drivers were battling for fourth position when an aggressive overtaking attempt by Norris resulted in contact and significant consequences for the team.
During the intense midfield scrap at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, Norris made an optimistic move that led him to lose control and crash into the barriers. The collision brought out the safety car, temporarily neutralizing the race. While Piastri’s car sustained damage from the contact, he managed to keep going and ultimately finished the race in fourth place. Norris, however, was not as fortunate—his race ended prematurely, resulting in a Did Not Finish (DNF) and costing him valuable points in the Drivers’ Championship.
Despite Norris accepting responsibility for the incident shortly after the race, both drivers were summoned by the FIA stewards to provide their perspectives on the collision. After reviewing the footage and hearing from both parties, the stewards concluded that Norris was entirely at fault for causing the crash. Consequently, a five-second time penalty was issued to the British driver. However, because Norris did not complete the race, the penalty had no bearing on the final results.
This post-race judgment was largely symbolic, affirming the FIA’s stance on intra-team collisions and driver accountability, even when the outcome of the race cannot be altered. While Norris’s misjudged move ended his day early, Piastri was able to salvage a strong finish and earn valuable championship points for McLaren.
