Red Bull Racing boss Laurent Mekies has addressed growing speculation about Max Verstappen potentially stepping away from both the team and the sport, following a difficult start to the current Formula 1 season.
Verstappen, a four-time world champion and long-time cornerstone of Red Bull’s success, has endured an unexpectedly challenging opening phase of the campaign. The team, which entered the season with high expectations, has struggled to adapt to new technical regulations and a fresh power unit partnership with Ford. This collaboration marks a significant shift as Red Bull transitions toward its in-house engine project, but early performances suggest the package is not yet delivering the competitiveness the team had hoped for.
The results so far have reflected these struggles. Verstappen managed a sixth-place finish in Australia, failed to finish in China due to a retirement, and could only secure eighth place in Japan.
