A helmet worn by the late Formula 1 icon Ayrton Senna has been sold for a record-breaking price at auction, just days before the anniversary of his tragic death on May 1, 1994. The helmet, a McLaren-Honda Shoei model used during the 1992 Belgian Grand Prix, fetched an astonishing £720,000—setting a new record for the highest-priced race helmet ever sold. This surpasses the previous record held by Charles Leclerc, whose 2023 Monaco Grand Prix Ferrari helmet was auctioned for £262,700 in aid of flood relief efforts in Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region.
Senna’s helmet from Spa-Francorchamps is more than just a collectible—it symbolizes one of the most heroic moments in Formula 1 history. During qualifying for the 1992 Belgian Grand Prix, Senna witnessed a horrific crash involving fellow driver Erik Comas. The Ligier car had slammed into the barriers at nearly 200mph, leaving Comas unconscious with his foot pressed dangerously on the throttle, continuing to pump fuel into the vehicle and heightening the risk of a fiery explosion.
Without hesitation, Senna brought his McLaren MP4/7A to a halt and sprinted across the track, dodging oncoming cars to reach the stricken vehicle. He cut off the engine and supported Comas’s head, providing critical assistance before medical personnel arrived. Thanks to Senna’s brave intervention, Comas recovered and returned to racing at the next Grand Prix.
