Formula 1 fans were left stunned after Max Verstappen was controversially voted Driver of the Day at the Spanish Grand Prix, despite a race marred by poor judgment, controversy, and penalties. The Dutchman, who started the race in third position, finished a disappointing 10th following a post-race penalty for an apparent intentional collision with Mercedes driver George Russell.
Verstappen’s Spanish Grand Prix outing quickly spiraled from potential podium contention to damage control. While his race began with promise — including a bold opening-lap move on Lando Norris and an ambitious three-stop strategy — the day took a turn after a heated battle with Russell. Footage showed Verstappen veering into Russell’s car, which led to an investigation by race stewards. A segment of the audience defended Verstappen’s selection, highlighting the sheer entertainment value he brought to the race. “The fans were clearly entertained — by his opening lap on Norris, the three-stopper, and yes, even the contact with Russell,” wrote one user. The result has put Verstappen’s title hopes in jeopardy.
