The tension is already thick, with Norris making it clear that he’s aiming to make a bold move into Turn 1 and take the fight directly to his long-time rival.
The rivalry between the McLaren driver and the four-time world champion has only intensified since last season. In 2024, Verstappen narrowly clinched the championship title after a string of dramatic, wheel-to-wheel encounters with Norris throughout the calendar. However, the dynamics in 2025 have shifted. While both drivers remain key figures in the championship narrative, it’s Norris’s McLaren teammate, Oscar Piastri, who currently leads the standings after a string of consistent performances.
That hasn’t dulled the fire between Verstappen and Norris. On the contrary, it has added a new layer of urgency. After winning the sprint race earlier in the Miami weekend, Norris enters Sunday’s main event full of confidence and with a real opportunity to close the gap to Piastri. The McLaren team has demonstrated impressive early-season pace, often outperforming Red Bull in race conditions—a trend that has left Verstappen wary of the threat from Woking.
Though Verstappen narrowly secured pole position in Miami, his post-qualifying comments revealed a degree of caution. The Dutchman acknowledged the superior pace of the McLarens and admitted he’s unsure if his RB21 has the raw performance to hold them off over a full race distance. “It’s going to be tough,” Verstappen admitted. “The McLarens have been very strong, especially in long runs. Norris, meanwhile, has made no secret of his aggressive intentions for Turn 1. “I’m ready to see what I can do into the first corner,” he said after qualifying. “I hope that’s the case and we can have a good race tomorrow. But I don’t just expect competition from Max. Kimi [Antonelli] has been quick all weekend and Oscar has been as well. So yeah, I just expect a tough race from all accounts.”
That outlook reflects the depth of talent at the sharp end of the grid in 2025. Kimi Antonelli, the teenage sensation for Mercedes, has consistently impressed with his poise and raw speed, while Piastri has grown into a serious title contender with calm, calculated performances. Starting from fourth, Piastri remains very much in the mix for a podium—or even a win—if the leaders trip over each other.
A key factor in Norris’s optimism is the nature of the Miami International Autodrome. Unlike the tight, technical layout of Suzuka—where Norris and Verstappen last shared the front row—Miami offers several long straights and multiple DRS zones, ideal conditions for overtaking. That, coupled with large braking zones and opportunities to dive down the inside, could set the stage for early fireworks.
“The DRS helps a lot around here with the overtaking—it’s what you need,” Norris explained. “You also have some much bigger braking zones than you have in Suzuka, so I hope so anyway. The track layout definitely gives you more of a chance.”
Memories of past confrontations between the two remain vivid. In Japan earlier this year, Norris couldn’t get close enough to challenge Verstappen, who went on to secure what remains his only win of the season. That race was characterized by clean air and minimal opportunity for Norris to mount a serious attack. Miami, by contrast, promises something entirely different.
The prospect of a Turn 1 showdown between two of Formula 1’s most talented drivers—each desperate to gain the upper hand—has fans and pundits alike buzzing with anticipation.
