The family of Jochen Mass, the legendary former McLaren Formula 1 driver, has provided an update on his health following a recent medical emergency. Mass, who enjoyed a successful motorsport career between 1973 and 1982, has been an iconic figure in both Formula 1 and endurance racing. His family confirmed that he is in stable condition, but they announced that he will be taking a break from public duties to focus on his recovery.

Jochen Mass made his Formula 1 debut in 1973 with the Surtees team before moving on to race for McLaren, ATS, Arrows, and March. He competed in the top-tier of motorsport intermittently for nearly a decade, securing one victory and eight podium finishes. His most successful period came while racing for McLaren between 1975 and 1977, where he established himself as a prominent driver. While he only claimed a single race win during his F1 career, his consistent performances earned him a strong reputation among his peers.

In addition to his Formula 1 accomplishments, Mass is perhaps best known for his success in endurance racing. He achieved one of the most significant victories in his career by winning the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1989. Mass was behind the wheel of a Sauber C9 Mercedes-Benz, along with teammates Manuel Reuter and Stanley Dickens, when they triumphed at the iconic event. Mass’s involvement in the 24 Hours of Le Mans spanned from 1972 to 1995, and he remains one of the most respected figures in endurance racing history.

The 79-year-old’s family shared the news of his health status in a statement posted on his official Instagram page. While Mass’s condition is described as stable, his family emphasized that he would be stepping back from any public appearances or engagements for the time being. This decision was made to allow him to concentrate fully on his recovery.

The statement from the family read, “The family of Jochen Mass wishes to share that he is currently recovering from a recent medical emergency. While Jochen’s condition is stable, he will be stepping back from all public appearances and engagements for the foreseeable future as he focuses on his recovery.” The family also expressed their deep gratitude for the support and well-wishes from fans and well-wishers, requesting privacy during this challenging time.

Jochen Mass’s contribution to motorsport, especially his remarkable achievements in Formula 1 and endurance racing, has made him a beloved figure in the motorsport community. Fans and colleagues alike are now sending their best wishes for his speedy recovery, hoping to see him return to full health in the near future.
