Fernando Alonso has shared an update regarding his health, revealing that he experienced a neck injury during the Chinese Grand Prix weekend. The Formula 1 champion struggled with the pain while racing in Shanghai, where he was forced to retire his Aston Martin after completing just four laps. The race ended early for Alonso when smoke emerged from the car’s rear, which was later determined to be caused by brake issues. However, the injury was an additional complication that the Spaniard had to deal with during the event.
Alonso explained that he had been dealing with a pinched nerve in his neck leading up to the race, which prompted him to wear additional neck protection for relief. “I was wearing some neck protection because I’ve had a pinched nerve or something these past few days,” Alonso said after the race. Despite his efforts, the pain persisted, and it didn’t help much since his race was cut short. He also detailed the mechanical failure that led to his early retirement, explaining, “The rear brakes were very hot from the first lap, and on the last one before retiring, I hit the brakes into turn one, and the pedal went all the way down with no braking power.”
This disappointing performance in China added to a rough start to the 2025 season for Alonso. In the Australian Grand Prix, the two-time world champion also faced an early exit, crashing out of the race on lap 34 as the weather conditions deteriorated. In contrast, his teammate Lance Stroll has had a more successful start, managing to finish in the points in both races so far. Stroll is currently ahead of Lewis Hamilton in the driver standings with 10 points.
The 2025 season has proven challenging for Aston Martin, particularly in qualifying. Both drivers have struggled to make it into Q3 in the first two rounds, with rivals like Williams and Red Bull outpacing them. As a result, Alonso remains unclassified in the driver standings due to his retirements in both the Chinese and Australian Grands Prix.
Looking ahead to the next race in Suzuka, Alonso expressed his optimism and desire to improve. He said, “We need to understand what happened, and next is a triple-header. Hopefully, I can see the chequered flag for the first time this year and we can turn things around in Japan.” Despite his early setbacks, Alonso remains determined to overcome the challenges and get his season back on track in the upcoming races.
