Lewis Hamilton has praised Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour as “amazing” while reflecting on their relationship and collaboration for the 2025 Met Gala, which he co-chaired. The seven-time Formula One world champion was among a high-profile group of co-chairs including Colman Domingo, Pharrell Williams, and A$AP Rocky. This year’s Met Gala celebrated Black fashion and history with the theme “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” a concept that resonated deeply with Hamilton, who has long been vocal about championing diversity and inclusion in both sports and fashion.
In a conversation with Vogue hosts Teyana Taylor and Ego Nwodim on the Met Gala red carpet, Hamilton shared the significance of being asked to co-chair the iconic event. He explained that his role in 2025 was rooted in a pivotal moment back in 2021, when he personally bought a table at the Met Gala to highlight and celebrate emerging Black designers. “It’s really an extension of the 2021 Met Gala, when I bought a table here for Black designers,” he said. “After that, speaking with Anna and starting to collaborate on what the Met could grow to and what it could one day be.”
Hamilton said the initial seeds of their partnership were sown during those early conversations, which eventually blossomed into a full-fledged collaboration. He recalled the moment Anna Wintour shared the 2025 Met Gala theme with him while they were both in London. Her decision to ask him to co-chair the event came as a surprise and a deeply moving gesture. “We were in London and she told me the theme and I was so, so excited. And then she asked me to be the co-chair, and in that moment, for sure I couldn’t believe it,” he said. “I’m incredibly honoured and she’s been amazing to work with.”
Despite his demanding Formula One schedule, Hamilton noted that Wintour made a consistent effort to keep him involved in all aspects of the planning. “I’ve worked really, really closely with her on this—even though I’m in [F1] season and I’ve been away working—but to be able to be involved, she’s included me in absolutely everything and I’m just honoured to be amongst the other amazing hosts.”
Hamilton took a brief pause from his intense racing calendar to attend the Met Gala, which was held just one day after the Miami Grand Prix. His dedication to being part of the event underscored how meaningful the collaboration was to him. Seated next to each other during the match, the two discovered they had more in common than expected. That encounter marked the beginning of a friendship that grew steadily over the months. “We met at Wimbledon and we just hit it off,” Hamilton said. “We found out we had a lot in common and sometimes we’ll just yap for hours when we meet.”
This year, Hamilton made a bold fashion statement at the Met Gala with a look designed by Grace Wales Bonner, an acclaimed English fashion designer. Known for her sharp tailoring and elegant aesthetic, Wales Bonner also dressed singer-songwriter FKA Twigs in a stunning Josephine Baker-inspired ensemble. Twigs’ outfit paid homage to the iconic 1920s performer with a deco-inspired, Swarovski-embellished flapper dress, a design that was both historically rich and artistically modern.
