Max Verstappen to Mercedes: Only Final Contract Details ann…read more

Speculation surrounding Max Verstappen’s future in Formula 1 has taken another dramatic turn, as Nelson Piquet Jr.—former F1 driver and a close relative of the reigning world champion—has revealed that the Dutch driver is edging closer to a sensational switch to Mercedes. According to Piquet Jr., who is the son of three-time world champion Nelson Piquet and the brother of Verstappen’s wife, Kelly Piquet, negotiations are actively underway and nearing completion.

Speaking on the Pelas Pistas podcast, Piquet Jr. hinted strongly at an imminent deal between Mercedes and Verstappen, suggesting that all major points have already been agreed upon and only the final contractual details remain to be ironed out.

“Who knows next year, with Max there… They are talking, everyone knows, right?” he said. “Just missing final contract details, but everyone knows that it’s an option.”

These comments have only added fuel to the fire of existing rumors that Verstappen is seeking an exit from Red Bull Racing amid growing internal tensions and structural changes within the team. The recent dismissal of long-serving team principal Christian Horner has already destabilized the Red Bull camp, and the potential departure of their star driver could throw the team into further disarray.

Verstappen, a four-time world champion, has been the cornerstone of Red Bull’s dominance in recent seasons. However, signs of strain in the relationship between him and the team have surfaced throughout 2025, with reports suggesting that Verstappen is increasingly dissatisfied with the internal politics and strategic direction of the outfit. The departure of Horner, with whom Verstappen’s family reportedly had close ties, appears to have accelerated talks with rival teams—most notably Mercedes.

For Mercedes, the addition of Verstappen would mark a monumental shift in their post-Hamilton era strategy. With Lewis Hamilton’s surprise move to Ferrari and George Russell’s future reportedly uncertain, Verstappen would bring both exceptional talent and championship pedigree to the team. It could also reinvigorate their competitiveness, which has dipped slightly since their last constructors’ title.

From a wider perspective, Verstappen’s move could trigger a domino effect in the driver market, reshaping the 2026 grid entirely. Red Bull would be left scrambling to find a top-tier replacement, while Mercedes could re-establish themselves as title favourites
