Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team recently submitted a petition to the Australian Grand Prix stewards to review a penalty imposed on their driver, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, during the race on March 16, 2025. Antonelli had initially been handed a five-second time penalty for an alleged unsafe release in the pit lane, which demoted him from fourth to fifth place.
The stewards deemed Mercedes’ petition admissible, noting that the team provided significant new evidence—a video from the roll hoop camera—that was previously unavailable. This footage demonstrated that Antonelli had sufficient space to safely rejoin the track without impeding other drivers. Consequently, the stewards overturned the initial penalty, reinstating Antonelli’s fourth-place finish.
This decision not only benefited Antonelli but also allowed Mercedes to equal McLaren at the top of the Constructors’ Championship standings, with both teams now holding 27 points.
