The FIA has issued a significant penalty to Haas F1 Team driver Ollie Bearman following a serious breach of regulations during Free Practice 3 at the British Grand Prix. The British rookie has been handed a 10-place grid drop and four penalty points on his super licence after a high-speed crash under red flag conditions at Silverstone.
The incident occurred after a red flag was displayed due to Gabriel Bortoleto’s crash late in the session. While drivers are required to reduce speed and proceed cautiously to the pits, Bearman was found to have accelerated to approximately 260 km/h into the pit lane, ultimately losing control and colliding with the barriers. The FIA determined this behaviour was a clear violation of Article 37.6(a) of the Formula 1 Sporting Regulations and Article 2.5.4.1(b) of the International Sporting Code.
Despite Bearman’s claim that his brakes were not properly warmed at the time of the incident, the stewards found no justification for the excessive speed and deemed the explanation insufficient to lessen the penalty. The governing body stressed that strict compliance with safety protocols during red flag conditions is non-negotiable and vital to ensuring the safety of all participants.
The four penalty points added to Bearman’s super licence place him closer to the 12-point threshold that triggers an automatic race ban. For a young driver contesting his home Grand Prix, the decision represents a major setback both in terms of race-day positioning and career momentum within the highly competitive Formula 1 environment.
This punishment serves as a firm reminder of the FIA’s commitment to upholding safety standards and enforcing discipline throughout the grid.
