Formula 1 has officially confirmed a significant change to its race calendar, revealing that one iconic race will lose its permanent spot in upcoming seasons. The 2024 F1 season marked a record-breaking 24-race schedule, starting with the Bahrain Grand Prix in March and concluding in Abu Dhabi in December. However, the expansion of the calendar has drawn criticism from key figures within the sport. Prominent individuals like Max Verstappen, Toto Wolff, and Helmut Marko have voiced concerns about the growing number of races, highlighting the strain it places on drivers and teams.
In response to this backlash, F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali announced that the number of races would not be increasing further. Instead, to make room for new venues, certain races will rotate in and out of the calendar. This means that while some events will maintain a regular presence, others may only appear in specific years, ensuring a more manageable and diverse schedule for all involved.
One of the notable changes confirmed by F1 is the Belgian Grand Prix, which will receive a multi-year extension. The race, held at the renowned Spa-Francorchamps circuit, has been an integral part of Formula 1 since the sport’s inaugural championship in 1950. The extension ensures that Spa will remain a fixture on the F1 calendar in 2026, 2027, 2029, and 2031. However, it will not be part of the calendar in 2028 and 2030, leaving those years open for a potential replacement event. The specific Grand Prix that will take Spa’s place during these two years is still to be determined.
Domenicali emphasized the importance of keeping the Belgian Grand Prix on the calendar, underscoring the historical significance of the Spa circuit. “Spa-Francorchamps is rightly lauded by drivers and fans alike as one of the finest racetracks in the world,” he said. The track has earned its reputation by hosting numerous unforgettable moments in F1 history, solidifying its status as a fan favorite. Recent improvements to the circuit, aimed at enhancing both the facility and the fan experience, have further solidified its place in the sport’s future.
The F1 CEO also acknowledged the ongoing commitment and support of the Belgian government and the Spa circuit promoter. “I would like to pay tribute to the promoter and the Government of Wallonia for their dedication and passionate support for Formula 1 in Belgium,” Domenicali added. This recognition highlights the importance of collaboration between F1 and local authorities to ensure the continued success and growth of the sport worldwide. The rotation of races, alongside the continuation of key events like the Belgian Grand Prix, represents F1’s commitment to balancing tradition with innovation in its evolving global calendar.
