The second round of the 2026 Formula One World Championship came to a thrilling conclusion at the legendary Shanghai International Circuit, where the final results of the Chinese Grand Prix were officially confirmed by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile. Following post-race reviews and checks for any possible infringements or penalties, the FIA validated the classification, bringing an end to an intense and action-packed weekend in Shanghai.
The biggest headline from the race was the remarkable performance of rising Italian star Kimi Antonelli. The young driver delivered an outstanding drive for the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, claiming the first Formula One victory of his career. Antonelli maintained strong pace throughout the race and controlled proceedings from the front, eventually crossing the finish line with a winning time of 1:33:15.607. His impressive race performance was further highlighted by the fastest lap of the Grand Prix, which he set on lap 52 with a time of 1:35.275.
The victory marked a memorable afternoon for Mercedes, who celebrated a dominant one-two finish. Antonelli’s teammate, George Russell, secured second place after a solid and controlled race. Russell finished just over five seconds behind the race winner, ensuring maximum points for the team and strengthening their early campaign in the 2026 championship battle.
Meanwhile, one of the most celebrated results of the race came from Lewis Hamilton. The seven-time world champion delivered an impressive performance to finish third for Scuderia Ferrari. The podium result marked Hamilton’s first top-three finish since joining Ferrari, and fans were relieved when the stewards confirmed that the result would stand after the race. The confirmation was particularly important considering that Hamilton lost his result in Shanghai the previous year due to a post-race penalty decision.
Ferrari also enjoyed a strong showing from Charles Leclerc, who narrowly missed out on the podium by finishing fourth. Leclerc remained competitive throughout the race and kept pressure on the leading drivers but ultimately fell short of reaching the top three positions. Nevertheless, Ferrari secured an encouraging double top-four finish.
Further down the order, Oliver Bearman produced an excellent drive for the Haas F1 Team, finishing fifth and collecting valuable championship points. Pierre Gasly finished sixth for the Alpine F1 Team, while Liam Lawson brought his car home in seventh place for Racing Bulls.
The remaining points positions were filled by Isack Hadjar, who finished eighth for Red Bull Racing, followed by Carlos Sainz in ninth for Williams Racing. The final point of the race went to Franco Colapinto, who secured tenth place for Alpine.
The race was not without its setbacks and retirements. Defending world champion Max Verstappen endured another frustrating race weekend after suffering a technical failure that forced him to retire from the event. The Dutch driver has struggled to extract consistent performance from his Red Bull machinery so far this season, and the retirement added to a difficult start to his title defence.
There was further disappointment for Aston Martin F1 Team, as both of their drivers failed to reach the finish line. Veteran driver Fernando Alonso and teammate Lance Stroll were both forced to retire from the race, leaving the team without any points from the weekend.
Before the race had even begun, several teams experienced issues that prevented their drivers from starting the event. Both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri were unable to take part in the race after McLaren discovered electrical problems affecting their Mercedes power units. Additionally, Gabriel Bortoleto for Audi F1 Team and Alex Albon for Williams were also unable to start, resulting in DNS results for both drivers.

Following the Japanese Grand Prix, the Formula One calendar will experience an unusual pause. Organisers confirmed that the Bahrain Grand Prix and the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix have both been cancelled due to the ongoing geopolitical conflict in the Middle East. As a result, teams and drivers will face a longer break during April before the championship resumes later in the season.
