Formula 1 has officially announced that a revised starting procedure will be used during the upcoming Australian Grand Prix weekend. The update was confirmed by race director Rui Marques, who explained that the change is intended to improve how race starts are organized and managed under the sport’s evolving regulations. The decision comes as Formula 1 prepares for a new technical era, including the introduction of new power unit systems and aerodynamic concepts that affect how cars behave at the start of races. 

According to the information released ahead of the Australian Grand Prix, the updated process introduces a specific “pre-start” phase before the traditional sequence of red lights that signal the beginning of a race. The purpose of this additional stage is to create a clearer and more controlled build-up to the start, ensuring that all drivers receive a consistent signal before the race officially begins.

Under the revised procedure, once all cars have completed their formation lap—or formation laps if more than one is required—and returned to their grid positions, a new visual signal will appear on the starting grid. The grid light panels will begin flashing blue for approximately five seconds. At the same time, the information display on the starting gantry will show the message “Pre-Start.” This brief period acts as an early warning to drivers that the actual race start sequence is about to begin. 

After this five-second pre-start notification, the normal Formula 1 start procedure will follow. This means the familiar sequence of red lights will illuminate above the track before the lights eventually go out to signal the start of the race. Essentially, the blue flashing lights serve as a preparatory stage that bridges the gap between cars settling on the grid and the start of the standard light sequence.

The introduction of this extra step is designed to ensure that drivers have a clear indication of when they should begin final preparations for launching their cars off the line. Race starts are one of the most critical and technically demanding moments in Formula 1. Drivers must carefully manage clutch engagement, throttle input, and traction control settings to achieve an optimal getaway without spinning the wheels or stalling the car. Even the smallest miscalculation can cause a driver to lose several positions within seconds.

One reason this change is being implemented is related to the evolving technical characteristics of the latest Formula 1 machinery. The upcoming generation of power units and aerodynamic systems has introduced new variables that drivers must manage during race starts. As a result, race control and the governing body have looked for ways to make the start procedure more predictable and structured.

In addition to the revised starting sequence, there is another rule adjustment affecting the opening lap of the race. The FIA has agreed that “Straight Mode,” which forms part of the new active aerodynamics systems being introduced, will not be available immediately at the race start. Instead, drivers will only be permitted to activate this mode after they have completed the first corner of the race. 

Active aerodynamics are a major feature of Formula 1’s upcoming technical regulations. These systems allow cars to alter their aerodynamic configuration depending on whether they are traveling on a straight or navigating corners. Straight Mode typically reduces drag to increase top speed on straights, helping drivers accelerate more efficiently.

By restricting Straight Mode until after Turn 1 on the opening lap, officials hope to ensure a more controlled start and reduce the likelihood of incidents during the first few seconds of the race.

The Australian Grand Prix serves as the opening round of the new Formula 1 season, making it the first opportunity to see how these procedural adjustments will work in a real race environment. Because it is the first event of the year, it often sets the tone for the rest of the season. Teams, drivers, and officials alike will be paying close attention to how effectively the new system operates.

As Formula 1 continues to evolve with new power units, aerodynamic systems, and energy management strategies, race procedures will likely continue to adapt as well. The revised starting protocol being introduced at the Australian Grand Prix represents another example of how the sport fine-tunes its regulations to match technological developments.
