F1 DAY 2 Testing Results: Lewis Hamilton DOMINATES as F1 rivals clash in bizarre track incident
Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time world champion, made a stunning comeback on Thursday morning during the pre-season testing session at the Bahrain International Circuit. After a disappointing first day of testing, where he finished 13th, one second behind teammate Charles Leclerc, Hamilton set the fastest lap time of the testing period so far. Although the times are not yet a major concern for the teams, Hamilton’s impressive lap was a notable highlight of the session.
George Russell, Hamilton’s former teammate, finished the session in second place, just behind Hamilton. Carlos Sainz, driving for Williams, secured third place, while Pierre Gasly took fourth. However, the session was not without incident, as Oscar Piastri’s McLaren collided with Nico Hulkenberg’s car in the final hour of the session, causing damage to the Australian’s vehicle.
The collision was unusual, as testing sessions are not typically known for on-track incidents between drivers. Sky F1 pundit Karun Chandhok described the incident as “odd,” suggesting that Hulkenberg was unnecessarily slowing down on the racing line, which led to the collision with Piastri.
The Thursday morning session was also affected by weather conditions, with precipitation falling at the circuit. Eight of the teams had not brought intermediate or wet tyres to the test, which led to an hour-long delay. Only Aston Martin and Haas had brought some form of wet tyre, but the track was too dry for intermediate tyres and too wet for slick tyres, making it difficult for the teams to conduct meaningful testing.
