FIA Calls in McLaren’s Norris and Piastri Over Late-Race Collision in Canada
Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri have been summoned by FIA stewards following a dramatic incident between the McLaren teammates in the final laps of the Canadian Grand Prix. The collision not only ended Norris’ race but also brought out a late safety car that impacted the final result of the event.
Norris had been steadily gaining on Piastri throughout the closing stages, staying within DRS range for multiple laps but struggling to find a clean overtaking opportunity. After a slight error from Piastri exiting Turn 2, Norris made a bold attempt to pass his teammate down the main straight. However, the move was poorly timed, with Norris miscalculating his braking and clipping the rear of Piastri’s car. The contact shattered Norris’ front wing and sent him into the barriers, ending his race instantly.
In response, the FIA confirmed that both drivers are being investigated for “causing a collision” and are required to appear before the stewards on Sunday evening to explain the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The situation is further complicated by an unexpected change in the stewarding panel this weekend. Veteran steward Derek Warwick was suspended earlier in the weekend due to inappropriate public comments. He has since issued an apology and will return to officiating duties at the next round in Austria. Former Formula 1 driver Enrique Bernoldi has taken his place and is overseeing proceedings remotely from the FIA’s Geneva-based operations center.
A statement from the FIA read:
“Following recent unauthorised media comments, the FIA has taken the decision to suspend Derek Warwick from his duties as driver steward for this weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix. He will be replaced by Enrique Bernoldi, who will be officiating from the Remote Operations Centre in Geneva. Derek has acknowledged that his comments were inappropriate and has apologised. He will resume his role at the Austrian Grand Prix.”
The crash has raised serious concerns for McLaren, with both drivers in contention in the title race. What was shaping up to be a strong finish for the team turned into a strategic headache and potential turning point in their championship campaign. The outcome of the stewards’ hearing is expected later this evening and could carry significant consequences for both drivers and the team.
