Lewis Hamilton has hit back at his critics after clinching a dominant victory in the sprint race at the Chinese Grand Prix. The seven-time world champion secured his first race win with Ferrari in only his second race weekend with the team, following his switch to the Maranello outfit at the start of 2025. Hamilton led the sprint race from start to finish, holding off fierce competition from his long-time rival Max Verstappen and McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, claiming maximum points in the process.
In a candid post-race interview, Hamilton expressed his satisfaction with the win, particularly given the difficulties he had faced earlier in the season. He acknowledged that the first race with Ferrari had been challenging, but he also pointed out the steep learning curve that comes with adapting to a new team. “I woke up feeling great today,” Hamilton began. “The first race was difficult. I really do feel a lot of people underestimated the steep climb it is to get into a new team, become acclimatized within the team, understanding and communication – all sorts of things.”
The British driver also took a swipe at his critics, referring to them as “yapping” without fully understanding the challenges he was facing. “The amount of critics and people I heard, yapping along the way, clearly not understanding maybe because they never had the experience or were unaware,” Hamilton added. His words were a direct response to those who had questioned his ability to adapt to Ferrari after his transfer from Mercedes.
Hamilton went on to highlight the improvements in his performance over the weekend, revealing that he felt much more at ease with the car in China compared to the previous race in Melbourne. “It felt great to come here and be more comfortable in the car because in Melbourne I didn’t feel great in the car,” he admitted. “From lap one this weekend we have been on it.” He also praised the Ferrari engineers and mechanics for their hard work in refining the car, which allowed him to achieve a strong result in the sprint race.
While managing the tires was a challenge for all drivers, Hamilton remained focused and was able to keep his competitors at bay throughout the race. “It’s hard to look after the tyres, but everyone was struggling,” he said. Despite the difficulties, Hamilton’s determination and skill shone through as he delivered an impressive performance, silencing his critics with a dominant display on track.
With this win, Hamilton has proven his resilience and ability to adapt, reaffirming his position as one of the best drivers in Formula 1, regardless of the challenges he faces in anew team.
