Oscar Piastri clinche remarkable victory at the 2025 Chinese Grand Prix on Sunday, delivering a flawless performance from pole position. The Australian driver dominated the race, managing his pace throughout and finishing with a commanding 9.748-second lead over his teammate, Lando Norris, who had been in the mix for a strong finish until a late brake issue and an FIA penalty derailed his race.
Piastri, who was starting from pole for the first time in his Formula 1 career, was virtually untouchable as he led from the front. His controlled race saw him hardly featured on the live broadcast for most of the morning, as he kept a comfortable gap between himself and the competition. The McLaren driver’s calm and collected driving left little room for errors, earning him a well-deserved win.
Norris, meanwhile, was also in contention for a podium finish but faced increasing challenges in the final laps. Early in the race, he spent most of the time holding off George Russell, who had been consistently pressuring the McLaren driver. By mid-race, Norris seemed to have the situation under control, with Russell sitting in third place while Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton struggled to keep up. Leclerc, in particular, had suffered damage to his car from the opening lap, losing an endplate on his front wing.
However, as the race neared its conclusion, Norris began to experience difficulties with his brake pedal, losing several seconds per lap. This allowed Russell to close the gap, and by the final laps, Norris could barely hold on to second position. Russell eventually passed him, securing a well-earned third place, while Norris finished second, 9.748 seconds behind his teammate Piastri.
Behind them, Max Verstappen, who started from a lower grid position, made significant progress in the race. The Red Bull driver passed both Leclerc and Hamilton after a series of late-race overtakes. However, he was never truly in contention for the win and finished fourth, nearly 17 seconds behind Piastri. Leclerc, who had been struggling with his Ferrari’s damage, crossed the line in fifth, ahead of Hamilton in sixth. Despite both Ferrari drivers’ early race setbacks, they were still able to secure reasonable points finishes.
Meanwhile, some of the other notable performances came from the middle of the pack. Esteban Ocon of Haas managed to finish in seventh place, a solid result given the highly competitive nature of the race. Kimi Antonelli, driving for Mercedes, claimed eighth place, while Alex Albon of Williams crossed the line in ninth. Oliver Bearman, also driving for Haas, finished in tenth, just over a minute behind the leader.
The race also saw some struggles for several drivers, particularly those at the back of the grid. Pierre Gasly, racing for Alpine, could only manage 11th place, followed by Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll in 12th. Carlos Sainz, representing Williams, ended up 13th, with Isack Hadjar from Racing Bulls finishing 14th. Red Bull’s Liam Lawson and Alpine’s Jack Doohan completed the bottom two positions, with Doohan receiving a 10-second penalty for an incident involving Hadjar.
The race was not without its casualties, with some drivers facing technical issues and penalties. Gabriel Bortoleto, racing for Kick Sauber, finished a lap down in 17th, while his teammate Nico Hulkenberg, also driving for Kick Sauber, finished in 18th place. Yuki Tsunoda, representing Racing Bulls, was the last driver to finish on the lead lap, while Fernando Alonso, who had been running towards the front, was forced to retire from the race early due to technical issues.
The eventful Chinese Grand Prix saw Piastri make history with his first-ever Formula 1 victory, while Norris’ race was ultimately defined by his struggle with the brake pedal issue and a late penalty.
